Milita Went to the Rainbow Bridge

Ingrid, Pipo, and Dalton made this beautiful card for us.

This morning, I was getting ready for bed (yes, I have an odd sleep schedule) and heard Lita messing around in a corner. I went to get her and noticed she was all wet. She had peed herself again. I cuddled her in my lap and got the distinct message that she was sad and miserable.

She had not eaten - we were syringe-feeding her. She was not drinking - we were syringing her water. Her brain was really messed up. We don't know why she improved for a few days and then crashed two days ago again. I guess that will always be a mystery. We had hoped against all hope that she would improve again.

As I was holding her this morning, I decided that I would give her a few more hours but that if she did not improve that I would help her to the Bridge. I just could not see her so sad and miserable. It was heartbreaking. I also got the distinct impression as I held her that it would be the last time I ever held her.

I put her down so I could get ready for sleep. I got ready to read and found Lita behind my bed. I picked her up and took her to her, "bad man, D. I thought she would like to sleep by him. She loved to sleep by him.

I read a bit and came back to check on her. D told me she was shivering and panting. I read a little more nd came back to check on her again. D said it was time.

So I called my friend DM, and she came as soon as she could. Traffic was bad.

I held Lita while she gasped for air. I felt so helpless because there was nothing I could do but wait for our ride to the ER so they could help her to the Bridge. There was no time to call Lap of Love or another vet to come to the house. She was in distress and needed help right that second.

She coughed a few times, howled a couple of times, kept gasping for air. It was torture to watch her that way.

Then, she left us.

We wrapped her up in one of her favorite fleece blankets with her head sticking out and took her to our vet. They let us spend time with her before we left.

I chose an urn for her to come home in.

My little baby and friend is gone. She was my friend for 14 years. I cannot imagine how we will go on without her. I love her so much and just keep crying.

Did I wait too long? Maybe. Do I regret seeing if she would come back? No. I only regret that she had such a tough time in her last minutes. I would have done anything to ease her suffering.

We love you so, so much, Lita. More than you will ever know. We will miss you beyond words.

Milita

  4. Oh, That must have been so awful for you, indeed.
You sure were doing a mighty fine and loving job to try and get her to rally, but alas, to no avail.
I am sorry you had to watch all that suffering...
You showered her with all the love you had to give, and that was all she knew, even at the end.

Rest peacefully now, Milita, and soon you will be flying with beautiful shining strong Angel-wings; over endless meadows and catnip fields. I know you will find my furblings there, too...

Sending loving purrs and hugs to you at this time of loss and feeling bereft.

  7. Oh Sierra, I am so sorry. You did everything you possibly could for Lita. You gave her a life full of love and you were with her when she could no longer stay. I know the terrible pain and emptiness you are feeling, but try and take some comfort that she is free of pain now and will rejuvenated at the Bridge. My love and hugs to you.

  18. She is at peace now and will be waiting for you at the Bridge. She had a lifetime of love. Don't dwell on the last few minutes but on how much love she brought to your life. I have lost cats that were very ill in the end but when talking to an animal communicator after they say that those moments were nothing 0 just a blimp in time. what they remember is our love.

  20. There is never any point in second-guessing oneself in such a situation. We all do the best we can with what we have at the time. Our decisions are based on love and compassion; that’s what we do for our furry ones. Milita loved you, and was loved. She knew that, and took that with her to where she is now. Godspeed, Milita.

  28. Typing thru the flood of tears for you Sierra & Bad Man D & Carmine. I am so so sorry Milita had to leave all of you. You did everything in your power to help her these past months & are the most devoted Cat Mum I know. Please do not beat yourself up.....I know I'm still doing that re: Siddhartha Henry but we shouldn't. I won't say you'll feel better in a few days or a few weeks....It will take time for you to find a new 'normal' & you will. And you have all of us here. I can see Milita running with Nylablue meowing about the boys admiring them. And Purrince Siddhartha Henry is watching over them with love.
Sending you gentle {{{hugs}}} Sherri-Ellen & **purrs** from BellaDharma

  37. I can't even express everything I'm feeling, from deep sorrow, to appreciation for having known this beautiful creature even if only through the net, to awe of the care you gave her for so long, above and beyond what anyone could have expected. Your love gave her the gift of an extra year of life. And I know it feels like nowhere near enough, but it was a gift. So is having had you for her mom.
