We Purr for the Mom

Hi everyone, it's Lita today.

I have news to share about me, but today I want to talk about the Mom.  I will post about me sometime soon, though, I promise!

On Friday night/Saturday morning, the Mom had some noms, and then she felt really horrible.  She went to lay down because she thought it might make her feel better, but it made her feel WORSE.  She tried petting me and laying there, but it just kept getting worse.  The Mom took some medicine, but that didn't help.  Neither did her normal tummy medicines.

She was crying and told D that the tummy pain wasn't going away!  Then her tummy hurt so bad that she started yelling and screaming in agony.  The Mom stressed ME out so much that I had an asthma attack.  The Mom said she felt horrible about stressing me, but she hurt so much that she could not keep from yelling.  She would NOT make a good cat, friends.  She can't hide her pain well like we do!

The Mom told D to call the ambulance, and then they came right away.  She threw on her flip-flops and went out on the stretcher, crying loudly.  The Mom must really love us, though.....'cause between her screams of agony, she said, "The babies!!!!" when D had the apartment door open.  What a nice Mom she is, worrying about us.

The people gave her some powerful medicine on the way to the hospital, and the Mom felt a LOT better after that, but her tummy still hurt.  Then the hospital doctor gave her a GI cocktail that numbed all her tummy!  She said she didn't have any pain after that for a while, MOL!!

The doctor lady told the Mom she was going to look for something called gallstones.  She found the Mom chalk full of them.  So the doctor lady sent the Mom for a more intensive ultrasound where they found lots and lots of stones.

Then the doctor lady told the Mom she might have to stay in the hospital and have surgery right then and there!  The Mom was starting to get scared - and worried about us.

Then THREE different medical peoples called "residents" came in to talk to the Mom and poke her tummy.  She was getting pretty annoyed because they wouldn't let her have ANY water until they decided if she was going to have surgery or not, and it was taking them forever to decide.  It took them THREE HOURS to decide to NOT give the Mom an emergency surgery.  But they DID say that her gallbladder needs to come out.

The ER staff was not very good at all, so the Mom was quite anxious to meet the surgeon.  She met with the surgeon yesterday (Tuesday).  She said he was nice, matter-of-fact, knowledgeable, and seemed to care.  And he is confident and experienced.  They discussed the risks with her other medical issues, and he says that they are minimal.  They discussed her symptoms, and it seems she has been having symptoms for months, and the Mom is annoyed about that because she has been complaining about her tummy pain for at least a year, and her old resident (primary care doctor) did not even bother to do any kind of ultrasound - she just sent the Mom away with no follow-up.

The Mom and the surgeon set a date, and the Mom will be having the surgery on October 5.  She will be having a robot do the surgery.  She says that is a little scary, even though the surgeon will be controlling it the whole time.

The surgeon gave her some medication for her gallbladder, but her insurance does NOT cover it.  So the Mom is just hoping and praying she does not have any more attacks before the surgery!

The Mom is nervous about it all.  A lot of her friends said that they felt a lot better when they had theirs taken out, though, and that makes her feel a little better.  The Mom says she doesn't know if she worries more about herself or us when we go under the anesthesia.

We are purring hard for the Mom and trying to make her less anxious.  Won't you join us?

  1. Your poor human - stones like that are VERY painful, so no wonder she was screaming. :-( I'm sending lots of purrs her way, and I hope she will be okay until she is able to have the operation.

  2. Gallstones are second only to kidney stones. Both are awful. Our petcretary has had three surgeries out of five with that robot. The first way back in 1996, the others in 2006 and 2008. Do by now the docs that use is should be quite experienced. Its actually quite neato to see how it works. Its kind of like a huge video game, MOL!

And you guessed it one of those surgeries was to take out her gallbladder...in 1996. She went home the same evening! Wow, it used to be that the hospital stay for a cholecystectomy was up to 2 weeks.

Hope your Mom will stay well to go through with it. And we will purr and send pawyers up on your behalf.

  5. We are sending lots and lots and lots of purrs and prayers to your mom, Lita and Carmine! My mother had her gallbladder out years ago. She was in and out of the hospital in the span of a day, albeit with very limited activity for a while after that, understandably. I'm sure the surgery will be a breeze, but we're purring and praying regardless!

  10. I feel for you. I've been through it myself. About five months after giving birth to my second daughter, I passed one stone. It took a week and to be honest, I'd rather have had labor pains for that time than gallbladder. By the time the doctor got me into the lab for an ultrasound, the stone had passed. That was in 1988. Forward to 2006. I was in W. Virginia at an anime convention with my three daughters. That Sunday - the last day of the convention - I was heading a panel and started getting the worst stomach pains. My mom had passed from a heart attack about 11 months earlier so of course I was worried. I managed to finish out the panel, but the pain was still there. It was there as we loaded up the van for the 13 hour drive home, and since I was the only one with a license and we had to be back the next morning, I drove all night. All I could think of was getting my girls home safely, but it took me over 17 hours, with all the stops at gas station bathrooms along the way. I downed an entire bottle of antacids, but they didn't help. By morning the pain had lessened, but I honestly don't know how I made it home in that pain. A trip to the doctor the next day had me going in for an ultrasound, which showed that my gallbladder was extended, it was so full of gallstones. The surgery wasn't bad at all, and knowing that the pain would be gone had me wanting to get the surgery ASAP. I've never regretted it. I'm sure your momma will be much better after getting her gall bladder out. It's actually a very basic surgery, and it's not something most people even miss once it's gone. Good luck. I worried about my furbabies when I was sick, too. They made me feel so much better. I'm sure you're helping your momma feel better, too.

  12. Sending your mom healing purrz. TW feels for you since she knows that Medicaid doctors stink. Her PCP is the opposite of yours. All he does is send her for tests no matter how good she feels. He doesn't listen to her actual complaints; he just gives her a referral to get tests for something entirely different.

  20. OM goodness! Your poor mom!!! Tell your mom that my mom had the surgery, too - after an attack, but it wasn't emergency. She had hers by way of laproscopy - I'm not sure if its spelled right - but instead of one big incision, she had 3 small ones. She was in the hospital for 3 days and home from work for 6 weeks. She said she was scared, too before, but afterward she was all better. Tell you mommy we will be praying for her that she won't have anymore attacks before surgery and will come through surgery with flying colors!!!!
