Lola: Diary of a Rescued Cat Book Review

Lola: Diary of a Rescued Cat book cover
Lola: Diary of a Rescued Cat by Dawn White chronicles Lola's story from the time she was dumped in a garbage dumpster through the first year in her forever home.  She talks about her rescue from the dumpster, time she spent in the shelter (where she became quite ill), rescue from the shelter, and her adjustment to her new forever home and new feline sibling Lexy.

Dawn had been without a cat for many years when she saw Lexy, who reminded her of a cat she used to have.  It was love at first sight, and Lexy found her forever human in Dawn.  Lexy had been waiting to be adopted at the shelter for nearly a year because she was, "too old," at the age of two!  Personally, I think adult and senior cats make the most wonderful companions, and it saddens me to see them passed up due to age.

Dawn discovered Lola on a Facebook page after she had been rescued from the dumpster.  Before long, Lola joined Dawn and Lexy's family.

Lola: Diary of a Rescued Cat is written in the form of a diary - each entry is dated and describes that day's events.  Here are a few of my favorite entries:

March 2, 2011
Stop the presses!  I'm putting out an All-Points Bulletin on my mousie!  It is nowhere to be found!  Mommy looked and even Will looked with a flashlight.  No luck.  Will bought me a new one, but it's not the same because this is the first toy I ever really had.  If you happen to see my mousie, please hold it for me so I can come pick it up?  Thank you.

Mommy's flip-flop makes a nice pillow.  I think I may be onto something here.  Maybe I can find an agent and sell flip-flop pillows.  I'd be famous.

November 3, 2011
Mommy is a little under the weather and is going to bed early, so I've been missing out on computer time.  Hey!  I have an idea!  I could hold her mouth open and pop one of my pills in there to make her feel better.  I wonder if I can get some of my friends to help me?

This last entry really made me chuckle!  I'm sure Carmine and Milita would love nothing more than to hold my mouth open and drop pills into it since they have to get medication daily.

You really get to know Lola through this book.  Her sweet and mischievous personality is evident.  I also loved the development of Lola's relationship with Lexy.  As I'm sure many of you know, it takes time for kitties to adjust to one another.  It was sweet to see Lexy slowly come around to accepting Lola as a part of the family.

The book also contains many beautiful photographs of Lola and Lexy.  Stories of many other rescued cats are also included in this book.  I've had the chance to read most of them, and they are very sweet and touching.

About the Author: Growing up in Rockland County, New York, cats were always a part of Dawn's family, but animal rescue didn't come to her attention until she adopted a cat from a shelter in 2011. Since that time she has been an advocate for animal rights and has utilized social media outlets to network for animals that need saving. She has also participated in animal rescue transports, assisting in bringing rescued, and previously unwanted, pets to their new forever homes. Dawn's genuine sense of caring has led her to choose her career path to help others. A dedicated Human Services Professional working with individuals with Developmental Disabilities and Autism since 1988, she earned her Master's Degree in Psychology in 1992, and became a Licensed Massage Therapist in 2014. She lives in New York City with her two cats, Lola and Lexy, who run the house. Dawn says "adopting two shelter cats has truly changed my life." Lola: Diary of a Rescued Cat is her first book.
