(A Special) Jewel's Journey

Today's Jewel's Journey is a little different.

I have been attached to Mango at the shelter where I volunteer for quite some time.  However, just about from the time I lost my precious Jewel, I've felt Jewel tapping me on the shoulder and telling me that I need to take Mango home to give her a second chance.  I was not expecting to want to open my heart to any new cat any time soon after I lost my Jewel.  But I believe that she led me to the kitty she feels needs my help.  It may sound a little crazy to some, but I don't believe that this was a coincidence.

Unfortunately, my financial/green paper situation doesn't support adding a third kitty to our family when I already have two special needs cats.  If my circumstances happen to improve, though, I will be over to the shelter to bring Mango home.

In the meantime, I want to find little ways to spoil her while she's in the shelter.  She deserves to be loved, and I think a lot of people misunderstand her.

She reminds me of Jewel in so many ways.  Don't worry.  I would never expect Mango to be just like Jewel.  Every cat is an individual and is special.  Nor would she ever take Jewel's spot in my heart.  They each have their own space there and always will.

Four Reasons Mango Reminds Me of Jewel

  • She has a similar appearance.  Mango and Jewel don't look exactly alike, but their coloring is somewhat similar (in my opinion).  Jewel had more orange in her fur, and Mango has more gray in hers.  Mango also has big green eyes like Jewel did.  The ones that pull you in and make you feel like they're looking into your soul.
  • Mange is a bit cranky.  Maybe that's not the right phrasing, but that seems to be the general vibe among most of the people who I talk with about Mango.  To me, she's simply misunderstood.  She is overwhelmed in the shelter, and she wants someone to love her.  But a lot of people are too apprehensive to get close to her, pet her, etc. because they don't know how to connect with her.  I have heard that I am one of the few that has been able to really connect with Mango.  Oftentimes, she will give me lots of kisses when I visit, and she tells me all about what she's been up to since I saw her last.  I get her to eat her dinner and give her love.  Sometimes she's not in the mood to have her head pet, and I respect her wishes.  If she's not in the mood, I just sit and talk with her for a bit.

Likewise, Jewel wanted to be loved for the majority of her life, and her former owner misunderstood (and mistreated) her.  He couldn't see that when she sat on the floor by him for hours at a time that she wanted him to pet her or at least acknowledge her presence.  When I brought her home, it took quite a while before she let me love her, even though she wanted to be loved.  I'm glad that she finally accepted it.

It was so sweet when Jewel curled up by me to watch TV or while I wrote a letter or followed me into the kitchen, even if I was just doing dishes.  I believe she finally got the love she wanted so badly.  I'm just so sad that she didn't get this her entire life.
  • Mango likes to talk.  Mango always has something to say when I visit her!  She'll roll upsidedown and rub her head on the dryer or cabinets or wherever she is that day, and tell me about what she's been up to.  Jewel used to talk a lot, too!  Once I was doing my dishes, and Jewel and I had a long chat about life.  I had a recording of it, but sadly it's gone.  That'll teach me to back up all my files more often.
  • She loves treats and catnip.  You're probably thinking, "What cat doesn't like treats and catnip?"  I've heard that there are cats who don't respond to catnip, and Carmine and Milita are pretty picky about their treats.  When I visited Mango a couple of weeks ago, I gave her a few treats that D had brought for Carmine and Milita's vet visits.  Every time I gave her one, she gobbled it up and looked for more.

These are just a few of the reasons I loved Jewel and why I love Mango.

Selfishly, I'd like Mango to stick around the shelter, but she deserves a wonderful home with someone who will give her all the love she needs and wants.  So if you'd like to learn more about this very special kitty, please visit Cat Care Society.

  4. I hope something works out so you can be Mango's forever home. I understand your feeling Jewel's nudge. I adopted KaTwo a couple years after KaChoo passed away because she looked similar. She doesn't act the same though, but she was at the shelter for 2 years and almost euthanized because she has fits with her tail. I think KaChoo new that I could deal with this and save this kitty.

  7. Oh we can feel it from your post how much you want Mango to join your family. Could you foster her at your home to open up a space at the Rescue? I understand what you mean about Jewell leading your to Mango because I firmly believe my Abby lead me to Annabelle. I was not in the least wanting another cat as it had only been 4 months since she had left, but I think Abby knew that Gracie was soon to join her and that I needed to have a happy young kitty in the house. I do believe she knew and led me down that path.
