Mancat Monday

Carmine: The other day, I heard the Mom reading something.  As is mes nature, me went to see what hers was doing.  Hers was running hers fingers over a blank paper.  Me thought hers isn't doing anything important, so me jumped up on the bed and laid down on the blank paper.

Then me thought "This is strange."  The paper had little grains of litter all over it!  Me wondered how the Mom was "reading" litter.

The Mom told me people who can't see learn to read Braille.  Hers said all the litter dots on the paper were Braille dots that made letters and words and numbers.  The Mom said hers taught herself to read Braille in high school because all hers friends read it and hers wanted to be able to type them notes and read their notes to hers.

The Mom says hers is slow at reading it, but it is useful.

The Mom says you and your humans can see the Braille alphabet and numbers here.

By the way, today is our dear friend Wally's 11th Birthday!  You can wish hims a Happy Birthday at his blog, The Island Cats.  Today is also our wonderful friends Hannah and Lucy's birthday.  You can wish her a Happy Birthday over at Hannah and Lucy.

  2. Thank you for your birthday wishes to us Carmine. Mum was interested to read about blind people being taught to read braille as her Grandfather was blind due to an accident.

  6. Mom's friend Lou (she passed a year and a half ago) was blind all her life. So she had a stencil thingy to take down phone numbers and stuff, and a braille typewriter. But she liked to have her hands free to knit and crotchet (she was retired, so she did this for a nursing home and some charities)so she listened to her books.
The running joke she said was "hey, I can read in the dark and you can't".

  7. We are so impressed that your mom taught herself Braille! It looks like it would be hard to learn, so kudos to your mom!
