Jewel Update

I took Jewel in for her second Adequan injection on Wednesday.  After her first injection, she was still obviously in a lot of pain, spending most of her time in her cubes and not even coming out to eat sometimes.

The vet and I had talked about Jewel being on pain medication while the Adequan built up in her system, so that's what I decided to do for her.  It hurts me to see her in pain.  She's on Bupenorphine now to relieve pain.

Unfortunately Jewel lost six ounces in one week's time.  I could tell she was lighter, but I was surprised she lost so much in so little time.  Because she's lost so much weight, we decided she should see the vet next week when she goes in for her injection.  I'm going to put a bowl of kibbles by her favorite cube so she doesn't have to walk to any of the bowls.  I thought this might encourage her to eat more.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to encourage Jewel to eat more?  Please continue to purr and pray for my sweet fur baby.

  1. Poor sweet girl! I would give her whatever she loves to eat just to encourage her. Sending purrs and prayers xox

  2. No suggestions, just to echo to give her whatever she'll eat (that's not harmful to cats, obviously).

And lots of continued purrs and purrayers to her and to you all.

    Peace.

  3. Have you tried warming canned food, to make it more enticing? We also have used Fortiflora (technically sold as a probiotic) as a food "topper," because it's tasty to most cats. Rotissiere chicken is a big favorite with our cats.

  4. I don't know if you would want to put poor Jewel on any more meds, but some antidepressants will give kitties an appetite. I will pray for Jewel.

  5. We are all sending our best purrs and prayers to dear Jewel. See if you can get an Rx for Cyproheptadine, 4MG and give max 1/2 tab per day. It is an antihistamine but also is a great appetite stimulant.

  6. We used Cyproheptadine for Squashies. It helped her appetite significantly. Funny side effect: it made her chatty for about an hour after she took it.
Good luck. The boys are purring for your sweet girl.

  7. You might try Royal Canin RD it is a high calorie food used for cats who are recovering from illness, surgery and we used it for a cat who had hepatic Lipidosis. It is a very thin pate. I think another is called AD from Hills? Both are prescription, only available at vet.

  14. Sending healing thoughts to Jewel - you may already have considered these, but canned salmon, tuna with oil or putting some of the tuna oil on kibble, fancy feast appetizers (just meat, no fillers), nutrimalt?

  15. I wish I had some additional suggestions, but it seems like you've gotten all the ones I could offer. Just try all her favorites, whatever they are, human or kitty food. When I am not eating well, I get fried chicken thighs, which I relish.

  16. If I am off my food mum buys the small frozen cod steaks for me and microwaves one for me. I will always eat them. Sending purrs for Jewel.

  17. We continue to purr for Jewel. Maybe something really tasty would spark her appetite...like tuna or cooked chicken.

  20. The kitties and I are still praying and purring for Jewel. I wish I had some tips for you, but I've never been in a situation like that. Just like everyone else, I think feeding her what she will eat is important. Maybe she would eat it if you offered her some pieces of cat-safe human food (plain chicken, ham, turkey, etc)from time to time.

  21. sending many purrs and prayers to Jewel. I also haven't been in the same situation, but my Angel Bobo used to LOVE a tiny bit of Swiss Miss Tapioca pudding. I know milk isn't great for cats, but maybe just a little lick? I also agree with others who said to try and entice her with bits of safe human food.
