The Flyer Program: Good Samaritan Pet Center

It's very sad to think about, but sometimes we have to surrender a pet. This could be due to an owner passing away or severe allergies, for instance. If you find yourself in the difficult position of having to surrender a pet and live in the Denver-metro area, you don't have to take your pet to a shelter for him or her to find a new forever home. The Good Samaritan Pet Center offers the flyer program as an alternative to taking your pet to a shelter if you need to find him or her a new home.

The flyer program would be especially good for those who do not need to find a new home for their pets immediately as the main requirement of the program is that you must be able to keep the pet in your home until a new home is found.

You must fill out an application and either submit via the Good Samaritan website or mail in order to be considered for the flyer program. After reviewing your application, someone at the organization will contact you in order to get more information about your pet as well as a photo, both of which will be utilized to create a flyer. Not only will Good Samaritan distribute the flyer to pet-friendly businesses in the Denver-metro area, such as veterinarians, pet stores, and pet hospitals, the organization will also post your pet's photo and information on their website as well as on Adopt-A-Pet.com and Petfinder.com. You will also receive a copy of the flyer of which you may make copies and distribute as well.

The organization requires a $20 donation when you enter into the program. They also suggest asking for a fee for rehoming your pet to ensure the potential owner is serious about and can afford to take care of a pet.

If you need to surrender a pet and are able to keep him or her in your home until you can find a new forever home for your furry friend, I would encourage you to check out the flyer program through Good Samaritan Pet Center. Pets Add Life Children's Poetry Contest

This looks like a great way to encourage kids' creativity, so I thought I'd pass it along! Please pass this information along to anyone who has kids. Thanks! :)

The 4th Annual Pets Add Life Children's Poetry Contest is now accepting entries from children in grades three through eight. Children are encouraged to write a poem on any pet-related theme or topic. Some examples of things children can write about include: pets as best friends, their love of pets, the joy a pet brings to their life, the relationship they have with a friend or relative's pet, how a pet has changed their life, etc.

Poems should not exceed 100 words in length. The deadline for poem submission is January 31, 2012 with winners being notified by March 11, 2012. Six poems will be selected as winners - one from each grade level. Each winner will receive a $250 gift certificate for pet products, the poem will be published in a national magazine, and each winner will be given a "by-line" in the magazine as well. Additionally, six poems - one from each grade level - will be chosen nationally and that student's class will receive $1,000 (each) to spend on pet education.

Milita's Home!

Thank you to effuryone who sent purrs and purrayed for Milita! We appreciate it very much :)

Milita is back here at home now, resting comfortably in her soft bed. She was a little angry with me (her mommy) earlier, but she doesn't seem to be angry anymore. :) She didn't have to have any extractions done, so she was able to keep all of her teeth, yay!!

The vet sent us home with some antibiotics to prevent infection. She said Milita won't like the antibiotics, which she has to start later :( If you could continue to send purrs and purrayers Milita's way, we would appreciate it.

How is everyone doing? We're sorry we haven't made the rounds in a while. We plan to visit everyone very soon!

Purrs and Purrayers Needed for Milita

Later today, Milita is going in for a dental cleaning and any extractions she needs. A few months ago, her veterinarian told me that if I had her teeth cleaned soon (within the next year) that she would not need to have any teeth extracted, so I certainly hope that is still the case. If so, she will still have all of her teeth. :)

I have never had a kitty get their teeth cleaned like this before and it makes me a little nervous because they will have to put her under anesthesia to do it. She is eight years old, so she isn't quite a senior yet, but she isn't a kitten, either.

I know she's going to be angry at me. I wish I could explain to her somehow that this is for her own good - that this will help her stay healthy and she won't have tooth pain or gum disease. But she doesn't understand. All she knows is that her mean mommy is taking her to the mean vet who will be mean to her by taking her blood and cleaning her teeth. :( It's times like these when I wish kitties could understand English.

Please send my baby Milita purrs and purrayers that it all goes well and that she doesn't have any discomfort or pain. I love her so so soooo much!

Denver Dumb Friends League Annual Telethon

First of all, we would like to thank effuryone for all of the e-mail and snail mail Christmas/Holiday greetings! We really enjoyed and appreciate effuryone's thoughts and kindness. We also hope that effuryone has received their cards from us by now and hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! :)

Second, the 14th annual Denver Dumb Friends League Pledges for Pets Telethon will be airing this year on January 29 from noon to 5pm on Fox31 (in the Denver area). The telethon helps raise funds for Denver Dumb Friends League to help support homeless pets, reunite lost pets with their owners, investigate claims of animal cruelty, and create community pet education programs. The program will not only feature kittens, cats, puppies, dogs, and other small animals available for adoption, it will also include information about pet nutrition and give you a tour of the Quebec street shelter as well.

I don't know what the minimum monthly donation accepted will be this year. However, when I was watching the telethon a few years ago, the minimum monthly donation accepted was $5, so that nearly everyone who wished to donate, could. You can also make the donation in memory of a pet who has gone on to the Rainbow Bridge, which I feel is a really nice sentiment.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) received more than 6,500 claims for foreign object ingestion and spent nearly $5.2 million on such claims from January to November of this year, according to the Brea, California-based pet insurance company. Some of the notable items dogs and cats swallowed this year are listed below. All of the pets who swallowed these items underwent surgery to remove them and recovered.

Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe

Keep Small Objects Out of Reach: Keep small objects of any sort out of the reach of your pets. These can include: paper clips, staples, thumb tacks, rubber bands, hair bands, twist ties, and other small objects that could be easily ingested by your pet. I think it's best to keep small items in containers out of your pet's reach, if possible.

Buy Appropriate Toys: Unfortunately, just because a pet store sells it, doesn't mean every toy is safe for your pet. I recommend not purchasing any toys that have small parts that can be easily pulled off and ingested by your furry friend.

Keep All Poisonous Plants Out of Your Pet's Reach: There are hundreds of plants toxic to cats. You can visit the ASPCA's list of toxic plants to cats in order to find out which plants are harmful for your kitty.

Signs of Foreign Body Ingestion

If your kitty has swallowed something he or she shouldn't have, your furry friend may exhibit vomiting, lethargy, and possibly diarrhea (with or without blood). Cats who have swallowed a foreign object may not be able to eat or to keep anything down. They may appear depressed or become dehydrated as well. It is important to note that the symptoms a cat may show after swallowing a foreign object can vary significantly depending on the location of the object, object size, how long ago the object was swallowed, and the degree to which a pet's intestines or stomach is obstructed.

If you suspect your cat has swallowed a foreign body and begins to show clinical symptoms, please take him or her to the vet (or emergency veterinary hospital) as soon as possible to avoid life-threatening consequences.

Kidney Disease Clinical Trials Seeking Feline Participants

First, I wanted to thank all of the kitties and kitty parents who left me purrs and/or purrayers and/or nice thoughts on my last post. I appreciate the outpouring of support so much. Please continue to purr and purray for me, if you don't mind. I just hope the situation works out the way it is supposed to. Thanks!

Now for today's post: I thought I'd pass this information along because I know that a lot of older cats, especially females, suffer from this and it would be wonderful if we could find new, better treatments for kidney disease. Our sweet, sweet Emma was taken from us by this disease. She's now an angel watching us all from the Rainbow Bridge.

Colorado State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, is currently looking for felines with chronic kidney disease to participate in clinical trials aimed at discovering new treatments for the disease. Please note that while these studies are being conducted in Colorado, not all of the clinical trials require felines to be seen in Colorado; felines from around the nation are eligible to participate in some of these studies as well.

Stem Cell Therapy: In laboratories, it has been shown that stem cells improve levels of excess protein in the urine, improve the function of the kidneys, and decrease scarring and inflammation in the kidneys. Cats who have stable chronic renal disease are invited to participate in this clinical trial where they will receive three IV injections of stem cells over several visits with a veterinarian. Felines' kidney function will be monitored throughout the study. This study does require that your kitty visit the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Colorado a total of five times.

All lab work, veterinary visits, stem cell treatments, and a $200 stipend for the owner are paid by Colorado State University's Frankie's Fund for Feline Stem Cell Research and the Morris Animal Hospital. Felines who may not qualify for this clinical trial include those with other disease, kidney stones, heart disease, kidney infection, or other renal complications.

Vitamin E Supplementation: Felines with stable chronic kidney disease, especially those with anemia, are sought for this clinical trial. The study aims to discover whether vitamin E supplements will improve a cat's antioxidant status and anemia, if applicable. Felines who do not have anemia can also participate in this study. After some initial laboratory work, kitties will either receive a placebo or a small amount of liquid vitamin E each day for a duration of three months. Cats will need to visit a veterinarian after one and two months of supplementation for a brief visit. After three months of supplementation, cats will need to visit the vet for additional tests as well.

Kitties who are not eligible for this study include those who are undergoing erythropoietin and those who possess other illnesses. All lab work, veterinary visits, and recheck visits will come at no charge to the owner. Felines from around the nation are eligible to participate.

Appetite Stimulation and Anti-Nausea with Mirtazapine: Another study felines from around the nation can participate in is this study on mirtazapine, which is a new appetite stimulant that also possesses anti-nausea properties. Cats in the study will be given either an appetite stimulant or a placebo every other day for the duration of two weeks. Felines will then cross into the other group for two weeks. Vet visits are required at the beginning, middle, and end of the clinical trial.

All vet visits and lab work are paid for by the study. At home, owners will be required to record observations about their kitties' attitude and appetite. In addition, all cats who are enrolled in the study will receive a two-month supply of mirtazapine and a six-month supply of Purina kidney diet cat food. Those who are not eligible for this study include cats with kidney infection or any other uncontrolled conditions.

Urine Culture Technique: Felines with kidney disease are prone to contracting a difficult to diagnose type of bacterial kidney infection called pyelonephritis. This clinical trial aims to determine if a new test is accurate in diagnosing this type of kidney infection when compared to standard tests. Kitties who are eligible to participate include those who currently possess pyelonephritis, those who are suspected to have pyelonephritis, and those who have a urinary tract infection. Participating cats will receive a kidney ultrasound and all laboratory tests needed for the study. Those who have been treated with antibiotics are not eligible to participate.

Cerenia for the Treatment of Nausea: Kitties who possess stable chronic kidney disease and who experience nausea, are "picky eaters," or experience vomiting may be eligible to participate in this clinical trial. Cats will need to have a physical exam and chemistry panel done by a veterinarian both before and after the trial, which will be paid for by the study. All cats will either receive Cerenia, a drug that decreases nausea, or a placebo for a duration of two weeks. During the two-week trial, cat owners will need to fill out a daily diary of the feline's behavior as well. Cats who possess other health conditions may not be able to participate in this study.

Kidney Samples: Colorado State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital is also offering free private cremation services to owners whose furry friends have gone to the Rainbow Bridge due to kidney failure. The veterinarians would like to study samples of deceased cats' kidneys in order to study how the cells age, if again plays a part in kidney disease, to better comprehend the stages of kidney disease, and to determine if a lack of appetite and nausea in felines with kidney failure is caused by a specific condition.

All of the deceased cat's ashes will be returned to the owner within about a week.

Banfield Charities Trust is currently holding its sixth annual Season of Suppers food drive in order to collect food for needy pets.

These days many pet owners struggle with feeding themselves and their pets. Some individuals in financially difficult situations include people who are disabled and on fixed incomes, seniors on fixed incomes, and people who are unemployed. Unfortunately, some individuals who are struggling with financial hardship may have to contemplate whether or not to give up their pets. Dianne McGill, who is the director and CEO of Banfield Charities Trust said, “We get calls every day from people on fixed incomes who are worried they won’t be able to take care of their companions or feed them.”

Banfield Charities is working with Banfield Pet Hospitals in order to try and collect $100,000 in monetary donations and 70,000 pounds of pet food this year. All of the food and money collected will go toward feeding needy pets in 2012.

The trust has also partnered with pet food companies Royal Canin and Pedigree Brand. Each of these pet food companies will donate one pound of food for every person who “likes” the Banfield Charities Trust Facebook page for up to 30,000 Facebook users.

If you would like to donate pet food to needy pets this year, you may do so by dropping pet food off at any Banfield Pet Hospital. Most of these hospitals are located within PetSmart retail stores. You can find your nearest Banfield Pet Hospital here. You can also make monetary donations at Banfield Pet Hospitals as well as on-line here. According to Banfield Charities Trust, a $30 donation can feed one pet for a month. You may give pet food or make monetary donations through December 31.

Hot Male Models Aim to Increase Pet Adoption

Found Animals, a Los Angeles- based non-profit organization, is releasing a 2012 calendar featuring male models holding cats. The calendar, entitled, "6 Packs / 9 Lives," is available in stores nationwide and was shot by Adam Bouska, celebrity photographer.

Found Animals created the calendar in order to promote animal adoption. All of the male models who were photographed are actual cat owners who adopted their furry friends as well.

A launch party is being held today, Saturday November 19 from 4-6pm at The Abbey in West Hollywood. The event is free and open to the public and will feature the male models from the calendar, shirtless male models who will participate in a catwalk walk-off, a signature gin cocktail called, "Cat on a Hot Gin," and celebrity photographer Adam Bouska.

Not only are the calendars available in stores nationwide, they are also available for purchase on-line here. All proceeds from the calendar sales will go toward low-cost spay and neuter programs in Los Angeles.

Help Create Jack's Law

Jack the Cat's Law would force airlines to utilize GPS or other similar tracking devices, such as leg bands, harnesses, or collars on traveling pets placed in the cargo section of airplanes. Failure to do this on the part of the airline should result in large fines.

Every year, pets are lost in cargo holds or baggage areas and are never found again. One pet, Jack the cat, was lost in New York City's JFK airport by American Airlines on August 25, 2011. American Airlines had mishandled Jack's carrier during the check-in process, which resulted in it breaking.

Jack wasn't found until 61 days later when he fell through a ceiling tile in the customs office, located in the same terminal where he had gotten lost. The kitty was severely malnourished and injured, and sadly had to be euthanized due to his condition. on November 6, 2011.

In an article by the New York Times, it was reported that Jack's skin was very thin due to the malnourishment and dehydration, which made him prone to organ dysfunction and severe infections. Before veterinarians recommended euthanasia as the best course for Jack, they had tried intravenous fluids, an operation, a feeding tube, and antibiotics.

Unfortunately, American Airlines was slow to provide a response and search for the kitty. It took the airline 60 hours before they called Ms. Pascoe back to give her an initial update on their rescue efforts. The airline only began to act more responsibly when the story hit the media.

What happened to Jack is absolutely heartbreaking. Please sign this petition so that we can prevent other pets traveling in the cargo section of airplanes from being lost.

At Color Me Mine, you can pick out a ceramic piece and paint it yourself in the studio. Once you are done painting, the staff will glaze and fire the ceramic for you. When it's done being glazed and fired, you can pick it up to take home. Hand-painted ceramics make great holiday gifts for friends and family.

National Pet Food Drive

Sunday October 30 kicked off the start of the second annual National Pet Food Drive. The food drive lasts through November 13, 2011.

PetCo and the PetCo Foundation encourage everyone to donate a little extra food and litter this year to help dogs and cats in need during the holiday season. Individuals wanting to help can donate to the National Pet Food Drive in one of three ways. First, you can either purchase extra cat or dog food in bags or cans and/or cat litter and drop it in the cat and dog food collection bins at your local PetCo or Unleashed by PetCo store. Alternatively, you can bring any unopened bags or cans of pet food and/or boxes or bins of cat litter from home and drop them in the collection bins at your local PetCo or Unleashed by PetCo store. You can locate your local PetCo store by visiting PetCo’s website and entering your zip code into the store locater at the top of the page.

Hill’s Science Diet has agreed to match each bag of dog or cat food pound for pound up to 100,000 pounds this year as well.

Another way you can help during the pet food drive is by volunteering your time. PetCo Foundation has partnered with VolunteerMatch, a national database of volunteer opportunities. You can go here and sign up to be a cat and dog food drive volunteer. Volunteers are needed from 11a.m. to 2p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays during the food drive (October 5, 6, 12, and 13).

Finally, if you want to contribute to the pet food drive, but cannot volunteer your time or make it to your local PetCo store by November 11, you can make a virtual donation that the PetCo Foundation will give directly to a food bank that needs it. You can make a donation of $10, 25, 35, 50, 100, or 250 here.

If you cannot contribute to the National Pet Food Drive this holiday season, don’t worry, there is plenty of time to donate pet food and/or cat litter throughout the rest of the year. Each PetCo and Unleashed by PetCo store contains collection bins year-round, so you can help needy pets any time of the year. Each store partners with a local animal welfare group or food bank to ensure the collected donations go straight to cat and dog owners who need it in that store’s community.

Paul Jolly, a vice president at PetCo and executive director of the PetCo Foundation stated, “Last year’s drive provided more than 90 tons - almost 200,000 pounds - of pet food for families in need, an incredible gift leading into the holiday season and such an easy way for people to help keep pets well-nourished and with the families who love them in tough economic times. We hope to double that this year, so we’re asking the communities we serve to give a little extra and help us raise awareness for this important year-round program.”

The Pet Food Bank launched in March, 2010. Since then, PetCo and the PetCo Foundation have been able to collect and distribute nearly one million pounds of cat and dog food and cat litter to pet families in need.

New Way to Support Homeless Pets in Colorado

There’s now a new way to support homeless pets if you live in Colorado, according to the Denver Dumb Friends League. You can now purchase Adopt a Shelter Pet license plates from your local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or your County Clerk office.

You can purchase the license plates during any time of year. You will receive credit for the time remaining between the date you purchase the license plate and the date of your license plate renewal; the money will be applied to the new purchase of your license plates, according to the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund.

It costs $80 to purchase the Adopt a Shelter Pet license plate - $50 is for the standard fee for a Special Use license plate and $30 is the donation that goes to the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund. After purchasing the Adopt a Shelter Pet license plate, you can renew it each year for $25, which will go directly to the overpopulation fund as well.

Not only are you helping support homeless animals in Colorado when you purchase this plate, you are also raising awareness about and encouraging others to adopt a pet from an animal shelter.

The mission of the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund is to eliminate the need for euthanasia in shelters due to pet overpopulation. The organization gives grants to help subsidize spay and neuter surgeries and creates educational programs on spay and neuter as well.

Halloween is just around the corner. Amidst all the trick-or-treating, visiting haunted houses, decorating, and throwing parties, we must remember to keep our furry friends safe. These tips should help you do just that.

Keep Candy Out of Reach: While tasty, candy can hurt your kitty in many different ways. For instance, chocolate is toxic for cats and can cause vomiting, increased body temperature, diarrhea, low blood pressure, high heart rate, rapid breathing, and seizures. In advanced cases of chocolate poisoning, cats can also experience coma, heart failure, and weakness, according to PetMD.

Cats can also choke on lollipop sticks or get them lodged in their digestive systems, causing an intestinal blockage. Candy wrappers can also get lodged in your pet's digestive tract. Thus, it is a good idea to keep Halloween candy out of kitty's reach or keep it in a secure, locked cabinet.

Keep Kitty Indoors: Another Halloween safety tip for cats is to keep your furry friends inside. Some individuals tend to think that black cats are evil and may try to hurt cats who are outdoors on Halloween. Additionally, if you are giving out candy to trick-or-treaters, your kitty will have ample opportunity to escape throughout the night. If it's possible, keep your pet indoors in a separate room away from the front door to prevent him or her from escaping when you are distracted handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. If this is not possible, you may want to consider boarding your pet for the night at a local boarding facility or your cat's vet office.

Safe Decorations: It is important to remember that your kitty may be curious about the wires and cords some Halloween decorations require. Kittens, especially, may try to chew on such wires, which can lead to burns and dangerous electrical shocks. Thus, I strongly encourage you to keep electrical wires and cords out of your cat's reach. If this is not possible, protect your kitty by enclosing electrical cords in electrical cord covers/protectors or spraying them with Bitter Apple, a taste cats find very unpleasant.

Kitty Costumes: Please do not dress your cat in costume for Halloween unless you know that he or she loves being dressed up. Dressing up a kitty who does not enjoy it will only stress him or her. The ASPCA warns that if you do put your cat in a costume, ensure that it does not impede your pet's movement, his or her ability to breathe or meow, or interfere with hearing or seeing. Also, ensure that the costume is not unsafe or annoying for your kitty. The ASPCA recommends trying the costume on your feline before Halloween night to make sure it does not distress your furry friend and to ensure that he or she is not allergic to it. Finally, make sure that the costume does not contain any small or dangling parts or anything that can be chewed off and choked on.

Jack-O-Lanterns: Pumpkins are definitely festive for this time of year. However, if you put a candle in your pumpkin, keep a close eye on your furry friend. Some kitties are interested and curious about fire and may get too close to it. Other cats might knock over jack-o-lanterns and start a fire. For the safety of your pet and your home, please use a lot of caution if you have jack-o-lanterns in your home during the Halloween season.

Good Samaritan Endowment Program Helps Indianapolis Pets in Need

Struggling families in the Indianapolis Indiana area will soon be able to get needed preventive veterinary care for their pets. The aim of the Good Samaritan Endowment Program is to give non-emergency preventive veterinary care to pets whose families cannot afford it due to financial difficulties. The program will also provide fourth-year veterinary and veterinarian tech students attending Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine hands-on learning experiences.

The Good Samaritan Endowment Program has been made possible through a $100,000 gift by an anonymous donation from an Indianapolis woman. Elanco Companion Health, a global company that develops and markets products to increase animal health, matched the donation.

Individuals who are interested in receiving basic, preventive care, such as vaccinations and heartworm prevention through the Good Samaritan Endowment Program must verify their financial need by filling out a questionnaire. Three community centers located in Marion County - Church Within, the Concord Center, and Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center - will help determine if an individual meets financial qualifications to receive veterinary care through the program.

Stephen A. Connell, DVM and director of technical, academic, and consumer services for Elanco Companion Health stated, "It's crucial to establish programs like the Good Samaritan to reinforce the importance of adequate veterinary care. Elanco fully recognizes the important role pets play in our lives and is committed to keeping pets happy and healthy."

How Much Would You Spend to Save Your Pet's Life, Survey Asks

The Kroger Company recently polled more than 300 pet owners to determine their attitudes about veterinary expenditures and pet insurance.

The survey revealed that a majority of pet owners (61%) would be willing to spend between $100 and $1,000 on medical procedures to save their dog or cat's life. Fifteen percent of those surveyed said they would be willing to spend between $1,000 and $3,000 for medical life-saving procedures for their pets while 10% said they would spend more than three-thousand dollars.

Participants in the survey were also asked what they fear most about their pet's health. Nineteen percent of cat owners fear kidney disease, 17% worry about cancer, and 10% are concerned with their cats getting injured in cat fights or fights with other animals. Twenty-seven percent of dog owners worry about cancer, 17% fear a hip, leg, or knee injury, and 16% are concerned about their dog getting hit by a car.

While only 2% of cat owners and 4% of dog owners said they currently have pet health insurance, 48% of cat owners and 61% of dog owners said they would consider buying pet insurance if it cost under $20 a month. In addition, about half, 55% of dog parents and 51% of cat parents said they would be interested in putting their pets on their own health insurance if it were allowed.

Mama wanted us to post and let you know that she is sorry for not posting in a little while. She really hurt her ankle a few weeks ago and is waiting to hear what it wrong with it. We don't want it to be too bad because mama will have to wear that horrible big scary boot again! We hate the boot!

Mama should be getting a call from the foot surgeon soon to tell her what to do next. We will keep you updated.

We are trying to be good nurse cats for mama. We are following her around more and giving her extra love, hugs, and healing purrs. Carmine is trying to heal mama's ankle by sitting on it and purring, but I don't know if he is helping... I hope so!

Take Your Cat to the Vet Week

This week (August 22 through 28) has been declared as Take Your Cat to the Vet Week. You’re probably wondering why such an event is needed. Unfortunately, the CATlyst Council and the American Humane Association estimate that even though cats outnumber dogs in the U.S. by 15 million, cats see the veterinarian half as often as dogs. In fact, Feline Pine, which founded Take Your Cat to the Vet Week, surveyed feline owners in 2009 and discovered that fewer than half of the owners took their kitties to the vet for checkups unless they were ill. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that felines visit the veterinarian twice a year for checkups.

CatChannel speculates there are a few reasons pet parents do not take their cats to the vet as often as they should. First, it is difficult to get a cat into his or her carrier. Oftentimes, when you pull out the carrier, a cat will bolt under the bed or the couch and is difficult to capture.

When I take my kitties to the vet, I pick up one of my cats while my roommate gets the carrier ready. It is definitely easier to get a cat into a carrier when you have two people on the task. However, if you do not have anyone to help you get your feline into his or her carrier, you might want to put your kitty into the bathroom and then get the carrier out. Take the carrier into the bathroom with you and shut the door. This will ensure your cat does not have a lot of room to run around or things to hide under.

Another great idea is to help your cat get used to, and even like his or her carrier. Petfinder has some tips on how you can get your pet to like his or her carrier. You can read the tips here.

I speculate another reason pet owners do not take their felines to the vet as often as is recommended is that the vet can be expensive. If your kitty does not have many medical problems, you might want to look into pet insurance, which will help cover the cost of preventative vet care. If you are on a limited or fixed income, do an Internet search for “low-cost veterinary care” in your city and state. Many states offer low-cost vet care for individuals who cannot afford to pay full price for their pet’s vet visits.

Even though vet visits may be stressful for both you and your feline, they are very important. Cats are very good at hiding health problems from humans. If you do not notice subtle changes in your cat’s behavior, he or she can suffer for weeks or months before you notice that he or she may not be feeling well. Regular checkups can help diagnose and treat diseases such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, arthritis, and kidney failure earlier, which could mean less suffering for your furry friend and less expensive treatment for you as well.

Regular vet visits are beneficial for both you and your furry friend. If you haven’t been to the veterinarian in the past six months, I really encourage you to schedule an appointment for your kitty soon.

Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau is a beautiful, intelligent cat. This breed makes a great pet and is popular at cat shows as well. We believe Jewel may be part Egyptian Mau, so I thought I would tell you about this great breed.

History

Egyptian Maus originated in Egypt. They came to North America in 1956 when Russian Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy imported three Egyptian Maus from Italy with the help of Richard Gebhardt. Two of these were silver females named Liza and Baba. The other was a bronze male named JoJo. The breed was accepted by the Cat Fanciers’ Association in 1977 for championship competition. In 1979, the breed gained recognition from The International Cat Association as well.

Physical Appearance

The Egyptian Mau is the only naturally spotted domesticated cat. The Mau’s spots are random in shape and size. According to The International Cat Association (TICA), the legs, tail, neck, and upper chest are barred with at least one “broken necklace.” The shoulders and haunches are places where spots turn into stripes.The breed also has an “M” mark on its forehead, like many other breeds do. The breed’s eyes are large, almond-shaped, and gooseberry green in color. The Mau’s ears are medium to large, broad at the base, slightly flared, and somewhat pointed. Other characteristic facial features include a worried expression and mascara lines around the eyes.
The Mau’s hind legs are longer than its front legs, which gives it what is referred to as a “tiptoe” stance. This breed also possesses a medium-length tail and coat.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association and The International Cat Association accept the Egyptian Mau in three colors for championship competitions: silver, smoke, and bronze. However, these cats also come in solid black, solid blue, and dilute versions of the primary colors blue silver, blue smoke, and blue spotted (the dilute version of bronze).

Personality

Egyptian Maus are intelligent cats who bond closely to their humans. They are curious, playful, and energetic. Some Maus will even play fetch with you.

Safe Plants for Cats

As I'm sure you are aware, there are hundreds of plants toxic to cats. But what if you love having houseplants or want to have a flower garden? Fortunately, there are also hundreds of safe, non-toxic plants to cats you can keep in your home or garden.

African Violet: African violets are beautiful flowers, which are most commonly kept as houseplants, but they can also be grown outdoors. African violets require good light and especially thrive in warm, but not hot, temperatures (up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit). In winter, African violets should be kept in the sunniest, warmest windows in the house. Baby's Tears: Baby's Tears can be grown inside as a houseplant or outside in an ornamental garden. Baby's Tears is a creeping herb that contains yellow or bright green leaves and lots of small white flowers. This plant needs soil that is constantly damp and it thrives in humid climates.

Bachelor's Buttons: Bachelor's Buttons, also known as Cornflower, is another good flower to use in an ornamental garden. Bachelor's buttons are most commonly bright blue, but they also come in pink, purple, and other shades of blue. The plant requires full sunlight and an average amount of water.

Blood leaf: Blood leaf is an annual shrub, which is often seen in ornamental gardens. According to How Stuff Works, blood leaf desires full sunlight, but they can grow in partial sunlight or in the shade as well. This shrub does not tolerate frost at all, so plant it after this danger has passed. Blood leaf also needs moist soil in order to thrive. Candy Corn Plant: Candy corn plant is a unique plant with lush green leaves and tubular orange flowers with yellow tips. This plant grows vigorously and according to the website, Guide to Houseplants, if not pruned, the plant can grow to be six feet in length. The website suggests putting candy corn plant on a trellis or in a hanging basket. You can keep this plant indoors or outdoors during spring and summer months. However, this safe plants for cats does not tolerate the cold or frost well at all, so be sure to bring it back inside in the fall when temperatures start to decline again.

Celosia Spicata: Celosia spicata is another flower that would look great in a flower garden. It contains medium to dark green foliage and violet or pink flowers, which may have a silvery tint to them. These flowers need full sunlight and require well-drained, constantly damp soil. This non-toxic annual plant can tolerate frost, which makes it unique.

Fireweed: Fireweed is a plant containing beautiful purple flowers. It is safe for cats and can reach two to five feet in height. According to the website Illinois Wildflowers, fireweed desires full to partial sunlight and cool to warm temperatures.

Polka Dot Plant: Polka dot plants contain green leaves with rose or pink spots. While this plant is pretty hardy in a range of temperatures, it does not tolerate temperatures below 55 degrees. Thus, you need to bring it in during fall and winter months if you do not keep it as a houseplant year-round. This plant thrives in high humidity. If you do not live in a humid environment, it is a good idea to mist the polka dot plant daily, particularly early in the day, according to All About Indoor Houseplants. Medium light is best for this plant in nearly every season. However, high light is suggested for this plant in wintertime.

Marigolds: Another non-toxic plant to cats is the marigold. Marigolds are quite hardy and can tolerate drought environments. They desire well-drained average soil and full sunlight. They come in several colors: red, yellow, orange, cream, gold, or are bicolored. This flower is a good one for flower gardens.

Goldfish Plant: Goldfish plant is unique in that its flowers resemble goldfish. Goldfish plant is a perennial and will bloom for several years if you care of it properly. This plant can grow to be three feet in length if you do not pinch off the growing ends regularly. This plant prefers full, indirect sunlight, and would do well in a hanging basket.

Marigolds: Marigolds are good for flower gardens and come in a variety of colors: red, yellow, cream, orange, gold, or can be bi-colored. Marigolds are drought tolerant, so they do not require a lot of water to thrive. They do prefer full sunlight, though.

Purina Recalls Select Bags of Cat Food

Nestle Purina PetCare Company issued a voluntary recall of certain 3.5 and 7-pound bags of Purina ONE Vibrant Maturity 7+ Dry Cat Food, which was shipped to 12 states last December. This recall comes after it was discovered that some of the bags are contaminated with Salmonella.

The recalled bags of Purina ONE Vibrant Maturity 7+ Dry Cat Food contain a, "Best by," date of May 2012 AND one of the following production codes: 03341084 or 03351084. Recalled bags also contain one of the following UPC codes: 17800-01885 or 17800-01887. Best by dates and production codes are located on either the back or bottom of the bag.

If you have one of these recalled bags in your possession, you are advised to stop feeding it to your cat and dispose of the food right away.

Cats who contract Salmonella may present with fever, decreased appetite, and/or abdominal distress. If Salmonella is left untreated in cats, they may become lethargic, vomit, have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, and fever. If you notice your cat exhibiting any of these symptoms and he or she has eaten from a bag of the recalled food, seek veterinary care for him or her.

It should also be noted that humans can get Salmonella if they do not wash their hands thoroughly after handling contaminated pet food or coming into contact with surfaces that had contact with contaminated pet food. Symptoms of Salmonella in people may include: fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping. On rare occasion, Salmonella can result in more serious conditions in people, such as arthritis, eye irritation, muscle pain, arterial infections, urinary tract symptoms, and endocarditis. If you experience these symptoms after having had contact with the recalled product, please contact your doctor.

I think some of the most wonderful cats can be found at local shelters, adoption centers, and rescue organizations. They make great companions, and you can form a great bond with a cat you adopt from a local shelter, adoption center, or rescue organization. However, if you have your heart set on getting a purebred kitten, your best bet for finding one is going to be to purchase one from a responsible breeder. Here are some tips on how to find a responsible and caring breeder.

Don't Search the Newspaper or Craigslist: A lot of people don't realize that responsible, caring breeders are not likely to advertise in the newspaper or on Craigslist about their kittens. The individuals who advertise in these places are those who are most likely breeding for profit rather than those who are breeding responsibly, according to the website Breeder Checklist.

Check Breeder's Lists: On the other hand, different organizations keep lists of breeders who may be responsible. Remember, though, that just because an organization has a breeder on its list doesn't mean that the organization endorses that particular breeder. It is still essential that you do your homework before deciding to purchase from a breeder.

The Fanciers Breeder Referral List is one breeder list you can search on-line by breed type or by location. This source lists breeders in not only the United States and Canada, but also in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia, China, and Japan.

You can find information about cat shows on many of the cat registry sites, like the Cat Fanciers Association, American Association of Cat Enthusiasts, and the American Cat Fanciers Association.

Ask for Referrals: If you know anyone with the specific type of cat you want to get, ask him or her for a recommendation to a breeder. Ask about his or her experiences with that breeder. Was he or she happy with the breeder?

Ask Questions: Any responsible and caring breeder will be happy to sit down with you and answer all the questions you have before you decide to purchase a kitten through him or her. Those who are in the business merely for profit will not, may be impatient, or become defensive.

Some questions you may want to ask your potential breeder include, but are not limited to: What is your primary goal in breeding - to achieve conformation (breed standard) or temperament? According to Breeder Checklist, a good and responsible breeder will aim to meet both goals.

Other important questions you may want to ask include: how long have you been involved with this breed? What can you tell me about this breed's history, positive characteristics, and flaws? How old will the kittens be before you sell them? A responsible breeder knows a kitten needs to be with his or her mother for at least eight weeks before he or she can be weaned. Will the kitten receive any vaccinations before I get him or her? What if I buy a kitten from you and it doesn't work out? A good breeder will want you to bring the kitten back to him or her because he or she will care about what happens to all of his or her kittens. Make sure you get all of your questions answered before deciding on whether or not to purchase from any particular breeder.

Finding a responsible, caring breeder will take some work, but it will be worth it when you pick up your new furry friend and bond with him or her over a lifetime.

Tips for Bringing a New Cat or Kitten Home

Bringing a new cat or kitten home is exciting! However, what some new pet parents don't realize is that the new kitten or cat often needs time to adjust to his or her new home. Using these tips may help your new pet adjust to your home.

Coming Home: When you pick up your new feline from your shelter, adoption center, or breeder, have a carrier ready to take him or her home in. Most shelters and adoption centers will provide cardboard carriers for you to take home your new kitten or cat. Take your new pet directly from the shelter, adoption center, or breeder to your home. Do not stop and visit with anyone else or stop to go shopping. It is always dangerous to leave a kitten or cat in a car alone due to temperatures inside the car at any time of year. Therefore, purchase everything you need for a new cat or kitten ahead of time, if you don't already have a resident cat at home. In addition, if you have children, do not allow them to take your feline out of the carrier while you are in the car. Cats are almost always afraid to ride in the car, and taking your pet out will only cause chaos and more trauma for him or her.

Preparing a Place: New felines tend to be very nervous in new surroundings; moving from one home to another or from the shelter or adoption center to a home is very stressful for them. Thus, it is a great idea to set up a special quiet place for your new pet. This could be a spare room or in your bedroom, for instance. This space should contain a litterbox, food, water, toys, and a comfortable place for your cat to sleep, like a cat bed.

Be Patient: New feline owners must realize that when a cat moves into a new (or different, if previously owned) forever home, he or she needs time to adjust to his or her surroundings. Give your cat at least one month to adjust to your home. If he or she is hiding, simply let him or her be until your pet is ready to come out and explore. However, if your feline isn't drinking, eating, or toileting, it is time to call or visit your veterinarian.

Spend Time With Your New Feline: It is advisable to get your cat or kitten on a day when you can be at home with him or her, such as a weekend. Once you take your new feline out of his or her carrier, immediately show him or her where the litterbox is and provide a bowl of water. PAWS recommends waiting an hour to provide your new companion food.

Throughout the day, spend a lot of time with your new pet, talking calmly and softly to him or her and playing if he or she is interested in doing so. Supervise all visits children have with your new companion and remind them to treat the kitty with tenderness. PAWS also advises keeping children's visits to a minimum as to not overwhelm your new furry friend.

It is also common for felines to exhibit behavior problems in the first few days or weeks after moving into a new home. These problems often go away as your new pet adjusts to your home. Remember to give your kitty a month to adjust to your home before becoming concerned about any behavioral issues. If your pet is still exhibiting behavior problems after a month has passed, your veterinarian or vet behaviorist should be able to help you and your cat through the problem.

Additionally, it is quite common for a cat or kitten to hide in his or her new environment or for adult cats to jump up onto high furniture. Don't panic if your new cat or kitten does this. He or she will come out of hiding or down from the furniture when he or she is ready. Simply continue to talk calmly and gently to your feline.

Finally, find out what type of litter and food your cat or kitten was using before you bring him or her home. Continue to utilize the same litter and food your kitty was using previously to decrease the number of changes your new companion must cope with at once.

Bringing a new feline into your home is certainly exciting. Following these tips and being patient with your new companion will help you develop a loving, lasting bond with him or her.

Milita is 8 years old! It's hard to believe she's 8 already. I've had her since she was less than a year old.

The summer before I came out to Colorado to go to graduate school, I lived with my dad. I knew I would be pretty lonely out here, halfway across the country from my family and friends so I planned on bringing a kitty with me. My dad suggested that I bring Milita because she was the most friendly of all the cats we had. Milita was certainly friendly, but I found that she was also a little pushy, literally shoving her brothers and sisters aside to get the most love from me when I sat down to pet them.

Milita traveled here with me, and quickly became my best friend. Between graduate school classes, my internship, and studying, I was easily spending 60-70 hours a week on schoolwork. I didn't have much time for a social life. Milita was my ever-present comfort. She would lay on the back of the couch and listen to the textbooks on tape with me. She would sit by my computer and help me write my papers. She'd come sit by me while I ate every night. And at the end of the day, she would curl up and sleep with me on my bed.

Milita is not only a very sweet and loving cat, she is also very intelligent, all traits the Siamese (Milita is a lynx-point Siamese mix). She has eye medication that she will hide from us if we do not put it in the medicine cabinet. She can open cabinet doors and regular doors if they aren't shut completely.

I have spent 7 wonderful years with my Milita and I hope to have many, many more. I love her and Carmine and Jewel so very much - I'm sure all of the proud pet parents know what I'm talking about :)

Toxic Foods to Cats - Part 2

In my last post, I began a list of foods that are toxic to cats. The following foods are also toxic to cats. Remember to seek veterinary attention right away if you believe your pet has ingested or come in contact with a poisonous food or plant.

Onions: If your feline ingests onion, he or she may experience vomiting, panting, gastrointestinal discomfort, a drop in red blood cells (hemolytic anemia or Heinz body anemia), weakness, high heart rate, and/or blood in his or her urine.

Rhubarb: Cats who ingest rhubarb may have severe reactions such as salivation, tremors, and/or kidney failure.

Oranges: Vomiting, possible photosensitivity, diarrhea, and depression may occur if your feline eats orange. The essential oils and psoralens found in oranges are toxic to cats.

Tomato: Tomatoes are another food that can cause some pretty severe symptoms for felines who ingest them. These may include: loss of appetite, weakness, dilated pupils, hypersalivation, behavior changes, drowsiness, slow heartbeat, and central nervous system depression.

Raw fish: Feeding your cat raw fish may result in a thiamine (a type of B vitamin) deficiency, which may also lead to seizures and a loss of appetite. In severe cases, the thiamine deficiency can result in death.

Dog food: According to Entirely Pets, if your feline accidentally eats dog food, it should not cause problems. However, if you are feeding your cat dog food on a regular basis, your pet may begin suffering from malnutrition and may develop different types of heart disease.

Milk: Believe it or not, most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Giving your feline milk may result in gastrointestinal distress in the form of vomiting or diarrhea. If you want to give your kitty milk, try Whiskas Cat Milk or CatSip, which are both lactose-free.

Liver: You can feed your feline a little liver without harming him or her, but feeding too much liver can lead to vitamin A toxicity. Signs of vitamin A toxicity include bone growths on the spine and/or elbows, osteoporosis, and bone deformities. Vitamin A toxicity can also lead to death.

Raisins: Raisins can lead to hyperactivity, repeated vomiting, and kidney failure if ingested by your pet.

Caffeine: Caffeine toxicity is a serious problem for cats. Rapid breathing, muscle tremors, heart palpitations, and restlessness are signs of caffeine toxicity. In severe cases, caffeine toxicity is fatal to cats. Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks, energy drinks, and cocoa.

Chocolate: Chocolate is one of the most dangerous human foods cats can ingest. Ingesting chocolate may lead to seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, and death. The toxic chemical found in all types of chocolate is theobromine.

Baked goods, gum, and candy: According to WebMD, these human foods contain Xylitol, which can lead to an increase in the amount of insulin in your kitty's body. Initial symptoms of poisoning may include loss of coordination, vomiting, and lethargy. Seizures may also occur soon after Xylitol is ingested. Liver failure can occur within a mere few days of consumption.

Raw eggs: In addition to the possibility of raw eggs containing salmonella, they block the B vitamin biotin from being absorbed in a cat's body, which can lead to coat and skin problems.

Obviously, there are many human foods toxic to cats. If you believe your cat has eaten or come into contact with a poisonous food or plant, please seek veterinary care right away by going to your vet, local veterinary hospital, or calling the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. Please be advised that the ASPCA National Poison Control Center may charge a $65 fee to your credit card for a consultation. Remember, this is not a complete list of toxic foods to cats. If you are ever in doubt about whether or not to feed your feline something, don't, until you've talked to your veterinarian about it.

Veterinarians always encourage pet owners not to feet their cats food from the table. This is partly because a lot of the food we consume is toxic to cats. These are some known foods that are toxic to felines and how your kitty may react if he or she ingests them. Please do not use this list as a complete list of toxic foods to your pet.

Apples, apricots, peaches, cherries and plums: If your kitty ingests apples, crab apples, apricots, peaches, cherries, or plums, he or she may experience panting, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, and/or panting.

Avocado: The fruit, seeds, bark, and leaves of avocados are all likely toxic to pets. If your pet ingests any part of an avocado, he or she may vomit and/or have diarrhea.

Garlic and leeks: Garlic and leeks can cause serious symptoms if ingested by your cat. These include: the breakdown of red blood cells (which may result in Heinz body anemia or hemolytic anemia), vomiting, panting, a high heart rate, blood in the urine, and/or weakness.

Corn plant and cornstalk plant: Corn plant and cornstalk plant are both toxic to kitties as well. If your pet ingests these planets, he or she may experience vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, depression, excessive salivation and/or dilated pupils.

Fig: If ingested, your pet may salivate, vomit, or experience irritation in his or her mouth. If your pet's skin comes in contact with fig, he or she may develop dermatitis.

Chamomile: Chamomile can cause contact dermatitis where your cat's skin came in contact with the plant. If your feline ingests chamomile, he or she may experience an allergic reaction, loss of appetite, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.

Coffee: Coffee can increase a cat's heart and respiratory rates, can affect the central nervous system, and cause restlessness.

Grapefruit, lemon, and lime: Vomiting, depression, diarrhea, and possible photosensitivity are the clinical signs you may notice if your kitty has ingested grapefruit, lemon, or lime.

Grapes: diarrhea, lack of appetite, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, lethargy, and kidney damage may all occur as a result of your kitty ingesting grapes.

If you believe your cat has been in contact with or has ingested a toxic food or plant, please call your veterinarian, local veterinary/animal hospital, or the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 right away. It is important to note that a $65 fee may be charged to your credit card for utilizing the ASPCA's National Animal Poison Control Center.

Strangers in the House!

On Thursday, mama woke up early to get ready to go somewhere, but I didn't know where she was going. I followed her around like I do most mornings. Then came a knock on the door and that dog who belongs to the man who lives downstairs (one of mama's roommates) started barking. I don't like it when that dog barks so I went and hid.

I heard strangers in the house talking to my mama and I wondered why they were here! Mama started looking for me, but I did not come out. Finally, she found me in our room and picked me up. I didn't try to run away though because I know mama would not take me to meet mean people.

Mama carried me out to the kitchen and a lady let me smell her before she pet me. Then a strange man (mama says he is my grandpa) started petting me. I was a little scared, but not too much. Mama brought Milita out, too, and she was more scared than I was even though she lived with grandpa for a year before they moved to Colorado (before I was born).

Then mama put me back in our room and they all left somewhere and Milita, Jewel, and I enjoyed some peace in the house.

They all came back later and mama brought me back to grandpa and that strange lady (mama says she is grandpa's girlfriend). The lady smelled nice, but she kept flashing the camera at me and I don't like the flash too much, but I was patient because I know mama loves me and I wanted her to be happy.

After mama set me down on the floor, I ran off and sat in the hallway and let everyone admire how cute I am from a distance. I kept watching them to see what they were doing. Then the strangers left and mama gave me and Milita a lot of love and cuddles!

Nestle Purina PetCare Company in St. Louis is recalling nearly 900 bags of dry cat food due to concerns of potential Salmonella.

Nestle Purina PetCare Company is recalling approximately 870 bags of dry cat food that were originally shipped to cat food customers in Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho. However, these customers may have distributed the product to other Western states as well.

The company is recalling 6.3-pound bags of Cat Chow Natural Dry Cat Food with UPC 17800 and 3.15 and 16-pound bags of Friskies Grillers Blend Dry Cat Food with UPC 50000. All bags of recalled food have a "Best By" date of AUG 2012. The date and production codes on recalled bags are "10331083 13" or "10331083 06." All of this information can be located on the back of the cat food bag.

The company is encouraging anyone who has a bag of recalled cat food to throw it away and contact them by phone 800-982-6559 or via their website for a refund.

How to Tell if Your Cat is Sick - Part 2

In my last post, I discussed some ways in which you can tell if your cat is not feeling well. In this post, I will continue that discussion so that you have the best chance of spotting illness or pain early in your feline.

Skin and Coat: Changes in your cat's skin and coat is one sign that your furry friend may not be feeling well. A healthy feline's coat is slightly lustrous, clean, and soft, according to the website How Stuff Works. If your cat's coat is looking unkempt, dry, oily, or dull, he or she may not be feeling well.

If you see bald patches or spots with thinning hair on your cat, he or she could be experiencing an allergic reaction, flea infestation, or obsessively grooming oneself in reaction to stress.

As you probably already know (if you are a cat owner), cats are very diligent about keeping themselves clean. If you suddenly see your feline stop bathing or grooming himself or herself, he or she may be ill or in pain.

Of course, sometimes when a kitty looks unkempt, it is merely a sign that he or she needs more grooming attention from his or her human. It is always best to ask your veterinarian about changes you notice in your feline's grooming habits.

Ears: The appearance of the ears is another way in which you can determine if your pet is healthy. You should look inside your cat's ears periodically. Checking your pet's ears during grooming time is a good way to get into a routine. Ear mites look like dirt or coffee grounds in the ears. While some felines will itch or rub their ears if they have ear mites, not all of them do. Seeing a blue or yellowish tint in or around the ears indicates something may seriously be wrong with your kitty and you should call your vet immediately if you notice this.

Cats who spend time indoors and outdoors or who stay outdoors all the time also need to have their ears inspected regularly. In winter, a kitty's ears can develop frostbite in as little as an hour's time. Additionally, if your cat gets into a fight, his or her ears are easy targets for scratches and bites. Examining your pet's ears regularly will help you avoid infection if injury occurs.

Gums: Changes in the gums are another sign that something is wrong with your pet. In order to open your cat's mouth, How Stuff Works recommends placing one of your hands on top of your feline's head with your thumb on one side of the mouth and fingers on the other side. Lift your cat's head up so that his or her nose is pointed upward. Next, take your other hand and put one finger where your cat's front teeth meet. Push down on the lower jaw gently to open the mouth.

It is not uncommon for a feline's gums to take on the color of his or her coat. Additionally, orange cats can have harmless freckles on their lips, noses, and inside their mouths.

Your cat's gums should be a pink color (if not the color of his or her coat). White gums may mean your kitty is suffering from anemia. If your cat's gums have a bluish tint, he or she may not be getting enough oxygen. Finally, if you notice the gums have a yellowish tint, there may be something amiss with your furry friend's liver.

Eyes: A cat's eyes are also a good source of information about his or her health. Cat pupils come in different shapes naturally. However, if the shape or size of your feline's pupils change, it could be an indication that something is amiss. Additionally, if your pet's eyes appear milky, cloudy, or filmy, your furry friend may be suffering from cataracts, viral ulcers, or another type of vision problem, asserts the website How Stuff Works.

The iris, the colored part of the eye, is often a shade of blue, yellow, or green in cats. Some cats even have two different colored irises. If you notice changes to your pet's iris or if you notice the appearance of spots or splotches in the iris, call your veterinarian. Sometimes the iris looks like Swiss cheese, as if it's falling apart as a feline ages, even though it isn't.

The sclera, the white part of the eye should be white; you may also be able to see some small blood vessels as well. However, you should be concerned if the sclera is "bloodshot," contains ulcers or splotches of color, is yellow, or has obvious signs of injury like scratches, bruises, or scrapes.

Felines also have a third eyelid known as the nictitating membrane. Normally, you probably do not notice this eyelid very much. However, one of the ways you can tell your cat is sick is if his or her third eyelid is up - partially occluding the eyeball.

Finally, the pink fleshy part under your furry friend's eyelids is known as the conjunctiva. As with the third eyelid, you probably don't usually notice the conjunctiva. If the conjunctiva swells, it may give your cat's eye a "meaty" appearance and is an indication that something may be wrong.

If you notice any of the signs or symptoms discussed in this post or my last post, it is best to call your veterinarian for his or her opinion and recommendations on your cat's health.

Cats are notorious for being able to hide their illnesses and pain from everyone. They've had to do this historically in order to not appear vulnerable to predators. However, their great ability to hide pain and illness can also make it difficult for feline parents to recognize when a cat is sick or in pain. Getting to know your cat's routine and his or her habits is very important for being able to recognize the early signs of possible illness or pain in your pet.

Appetite and Eating: Knowing your cat's eating habits will help you recognize when something is amiss with his or her appetite or eating. For instance, if you feed your cat dry food in the morning and it typically lasts all day, you'll recognize your cat is not eating as much or doesn't have an appetite if his or her bowl is half-full at the end of the day. If you feed your cat wet (canned) food everyday and he or she is typically excited about it, you can assume he or she has no appetite if your cat doesn't come running for his or her wet dinner as usual. However, if your cat comes running for his or her dinner and then doesn't eat much (or anything at all), your cat may not feel as if he or she can eat much. Loss of appetite and/or changes in eating habits is one sign your fur baby may be ill.

Drinking: Your cat's drinking habits are another important thing you should know about him or her. If your cat is not drinking as much as usual, he or she may become dehydrated and may need to get fluids at your veterinarian. In order to tell if your pet is dehydrated, gently lift up the skin between his or her shoulder blades and release it. If the skin falls back into place immediately, your feline is hydrated. If the skin does not snap back into place immediately, your cat is likely suffering from dehydration.

Similarly, if your furry friend begins drinking more water than usual, it could be a sign of a serious problem, such as diabetes.

Elimination: Though it may not be the most comfortable thing to think about, it is important to know your cat's usual elimination habits. If your feline is litterbox trained and typically uses his or her litterbox, he or she may be ill or in pain if he or she suddenly stops using it and eliminates elsewhere. Of course, a refusal to utilize the litterbox could simply mean that the box is not clean enough for your furry friend. However, if after cleaning the box and filling it with fresh litter, your cat still refuses to use the litterbox, there is likely something amiss with your pet.

Personality and Behavior Changes: Personality and behavior changes are another sign that may indicate something is wrong with your pet. If your cat typically greets you at the door when you come home and stops doing so, there may be something wrong. If your furry friend usually follows you around your home, but stops doing so and begins sleeping in another room while you are at home instead, this could mean your fur baby is ill. Lethargy and sudden aggressiveness are some other changes you might see in your pet if he or she is not feeling well.

These are just a few of the signs that may indicate your pet is not feeling well. I hope you will return to learn about other signs that your feline may be ill or in pain.

Dangers of the Great Outdoors to Cats

Many cat owners debate on whether they should allow their furry friends to go outside or whether they should keep their furry friends as indoor-only cats. Consider this: according to Traci M. Jones who wrote, "Perils in the Life of an Outdoor Cat," the average lifespan of a cat who spends all of his or her time outdoors is approximately a year and a half whereas the average lifespan for a cat who spends all of his or her time indoors is more than 15 years. There are several dangers to consider when deciding whether to allow your cat to spend time outdoors, and if so, when and where.

Heartworm: Cats, like dogs, can get heartworm when they spend time outdoors. This occurs when an infected insect bites a cat. If you allow your cat to spend any time outdoors, please be responsible and provide your furry friend with heartworm prevention. You can get heartworm prevention through your veterinarian.

Diseases: While there are vaccinations for some diseases, vaccinations have not been created against every disease your cat can get outdoors through other animals. Furthermore, according to Tracie M. Jones, while there are vaccinations against feline leukemia and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), they are not reliably effective.

Fleas, Tics, and Worms....Oh my! While fleas, tics, and worms do not pose life-threatening dangers to your cat, fleas, tics, and worms can make your cat - and you - very uncomfortable. When a cat gets fleas and brings them into your home, the fleas are just as likely to start biting you as they are your kitty. Additionally, getting rid of fleas is time-consuming and challenging! If you allow your cat to spend time outdoors, please be a responsible pet owner by putting regular flea and tic prevention on your kitty. You can purchase good quality flea and tic prevention, like Frontline or Advantage, from your veterinarian. Please do not utilize over-the-counter flea and tic prevention products such as Hartz as these products are often not safe for your furry friend.

In addition to fleas and tics, kitties can contract different types of parasites and worms while spending time outdoors. For instance, cats can contract ringworm by digging in dirt. Ringworm is very contagious to humans as well.

Toxic plants: There are hundreds of toxic plants to cats. If ingested, these plants can cause everything from vomiting to coma to death, depending on the plant ingested and how much was eaten. A few of the plants toxic to felines include: all types of lilies, cherries, daisies, spring parsley, tulips, irises, tomato plants, wisteria, and yews.

Cruel people: You might have a fence in your backyard, but this means nothing to your furry friend. To your furry friend, a fence is merely an obstacle to get over, not a barrier to keep him or her in your yard where he or she might be safe. If your cat jumps your fence into a neighbor's yard, your neighbor may or may not mind. If your neighbor doesn't want a furry visitor in his or her yard, though, your neighbor may not have any problem shooting, hitting, poisoning, or harming your fur baby in any other way.

Cats may not even be safe in your own backyard. I heard a very tragic story where a cat was taken from his own backyard and dunked in paint thinner! The cat ultimately lost his life due to the insanely cruel actions of another person.

Automobiles: In addition, if your cat escapes from your yard, he or she runs the risk of getting hit by an automobile. I used to live in the country where there are no speed limits on roads and it was not an uncommon occurrence to see a poor fur baby laying on the side of the road. It's horrible to think about, but the sad truth is, a lot of people never see cats (speed limit or not) until it's too late.

All of these dangers pose very real threats to our fur babies, but that doesn't mean you can't let your furry friend enjoy the great outdoors. If you choose to keep your cat strictly indoors, you can buy him or her nature DVDs that allow him or her to see the outdoors from the safety of your home. Window perches are another great way to allow your feline to enjoy the outdoors while inside. If you want to let your kitty go outside, my best advice would be to either build (or buy) him or her a secure outside enclosure or to put a harness and leash on your feline and take him outside with you so you can supervise his or her outdoor time.

Adopt-a-thon to Help Cats and Dogs Displaced by Joplin Tornado

The Joplin Humane Society will be holding an adopt-a-thon on June 25 and 26 to give pets displaced by the May 22 tornado a second chance at a forever home. The event is being sponsored by the ASPCA and PetSmart Charities.

The ASPCA awarded the Joplin Humane Society a $100,000 grant to provide nearly 1,300 displaced cats and dogs emergency shelter and care. The shelter has worked tirelessly to try to reunite as many pet owners as they could with their cats and dogs. They have even held cats and dogs twice as long as the mandatory waiting period in order to ensure they could reunite as many pets with their owners as possible.

During the adopt-a-thon, nearly 600 cats and dogs will be up for adoption. The adoption fee will be waived during the event. All animals will come with their age-appropriate vaccinations, collars, ID tags, microchip, and will be spayed/neutered. Additionally, all cats have been tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV and all dogs have been tested for heartworm. All dogs have also been "SAFER" tested for aggressiveness, according to the Joplin Humane Society. Cats and dogs will all go home with a "goodie bag," and cats will also be provided with a carrier.

You do not have to be a Missouri resident in order to adopt during this event. All adoptions will be on a first-come basis and all potential adopters must fill out an application to be considered. After a cat or dog has been adopted, the organization will follow up with a call in order to ensure the adoption is working out and to answer any questions adopters may have.

Adopters of these pets do not have to give the pet back to its former owner if he or she comes forward, however, an adopter may volunteer to do so.

If you are interested in a special needs pet, please check out the Joplin Humane Society's Facebook page. All potential adopters need to apply for special needs pets in advance. Special needs pets will have a variety of needs. For instance, a special needs cat may have Feline Leukemia, be FIV positive, be a senior, or have a broken bone. Likewise, a special needs dog may have heartworm, be a senior, or have a temporary medical injury.

If you are interested in adoption both a dog and a cat during the event, you must fill out both the dog and the cat adoption application forms. The organization requests you print, fill out, and bring the application with you when you attend the adopt-a-thon.

During the adopt-a-thon, tours of the ASPCA Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation Unit, dog and cat rescue demonstrations by the Missouri Emergency Response Services team, and other activities will also take place. Food and music will also be present during the event.

To reiterate, you do not have to be a Missouri resident to adopt a cat or dog at this event and all adoptions are free of charge.

Meet, Jewel

I recently became roommates with one of my friends and his kitty, Jewel, so I thought it was time to introduce her. :)

Jewel is 13 years old and pretty healthy. She enjoys talking a lot to her daddy and sometimes to me, too. She really loves Pounce treats in every flavor and sometimes she'll stand on her hind legs to get one.

While Jewel is learning to tolerate my babies, Carmine and Milita, I don't think she will ever love them the way Carmine and Milita love each other. One thing she DOES love about my babies, though, is that she gets to eat wet food everyday! As part of Carmine's prescription diet, he's required to eat wet food daily, and we all know you can't feed one cat a yummy meal and not the rest of them :)

Jewel enjoys laying in sunbeams and laying outside in the sun on the deck. Napping and following her daddy around the house are among her other favorite activities. I recently discovered she likes playing with fishing pole toys as well. Something cute Jewel does is that she lays under blankets, especially in wintertime.

We think Jewel has some Egyptian Mau in her. She has big, beautiful green eyes and a gray coat with some orange underneath.

Heat Stroke in Cats

In the heart of summer, the extreme heat may lead you to become dehydrated, and to experience physical symptoms such as dizziness and heart palpitations - signs that you may be suffering from heat stroke. Likewise, the heat can lead your cat to experience heat stroke as well. While our furry friends cannot tell us they are too hot, you can observe several signs in them that will tell you they are overheated.

At-Risk Cats:

Some cats are more prone to developing heat stroke than others. However, remember that ALL cats can suffer from heat stroke.

Cats who are especially prone to developing heat stroke include: kittens, senior cats (8 years old and older), obese cats, and cats who have dense coats, such as Persians.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Cats:

Anxiety - your cat may be agitated or pace around.
Lethargy.
Panting.
Gums that are dark red or pale in color.
Bright red tongue.
Increased internal body temperature - according to About, normal body temperature for felines is between 100.5 to 101.5 degrees. An internal temperature of 104 degrees or higher is cause for concern.
Diarrhea and/or vomiting.
Collapse.
Nose bleed.
Muscle tremors.
Increased heartbeat.
Lethargy.
Hyperventilation or respiratory distress.
Coma.

Preventing Heat Stroke in Cats:

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways in which you can help keep your kitty from overheating during the summer months. First, keep your cat indoors during summer months in a cool interior room of the house (preferably with some air conditioning or a fan). Some cats enjoy laying in the bathroom because the tile floor is often cooler than carpeted spaces.

One suggestion About has regarding keeping your cat cool that I really like is to take a bag of frozen peas and put them in your cat's bed. The peas will mold around him and he or she will have somewhere very cool to sleep.

Never leave your furry friend alone in a parked car, even for a few minutes. The temperature in a parked car rises very quickly, even in the cooler months, so it is essential that when you are traveling with your feline that there is plenty of ventilation.

In order to ensure your cat stays hydrated, ensure he or she always has a supply of fresh, cool, water. You might want to put more bowls of water down for your kitty during the summer because staying hydrated is so important. You can even drop an ice cube in your cat's water to encourage him or her to drink it.

If your cat shows the signs of heat stroke, it is essential that you begin cooling your cat as soon as possible. Get your kitty wet with cool, but NOT cold water. Next, wrap some cool, damp towels around him or her so that he or she can continue to cool down while you take your furry friend to the vet. If your cat exhibits the signs of heat stroke, it is essential that you take him or her to the vet (or a vet hospital) immediately, as this is a life-threatening condition.

Types, Treatment, and Prevention of Sunburns in Cats

As I noted in an earlier post, cats can get sunburned just like humans. Sunburns raise the risk of your cat developing skin cancer in the future. Thus, it is important to know how to prevent sunburn. It's also important to be able to spot the signs and symptoms of sunburn in your cat so that he or she can get prompt treatment for it if it occurs.

While white cats are especially prone to sunburns, any place where a cat has thin fur is also prone to getting burned. These places include a feline's ears, stomach, and nose.

Prevention:

Prevention is always best when it comes to sunburns in pets. There are several ways in which you may prevent your furry friend from getting a burn in the warmer months. First, make sure your cat stays out of the sun during the sun's peak hours - between 10am to 4pm.

Next, if your kitty goes outside, lays in sunbeams, or sits in the window while the sun is out, you can put sunscreen on him or her to protect your kitty from burns. Some veterinarians recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher that is safe to use on infants. Ask your veterinarian for his or her recommendations for your furry friend. Be sure to apply the sunscreen to your cat's thin-skinned areas if he or she is not white or light-colored. If your furry friend is white or light colored, it is best to apply sunscreen all over his or her body to protect against sunburn. You should reapply sunscreen every two hours for best protection.

Finally, make sure your cat always has access to shade, whether he or she is spending time indoors or out. If your kitty likes spending time sunbathing or looking out the window, you can buy UV window film from your local home improvement store. The film is easy to apply and remove. The film is also available for sliding glass doors. As an added bonus, the film also helps keep your home cooler during the summer.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of sunburn in your cat will help you know when your pet needs medical attention.

Types of Sunburns:

First degree burns: When your cat has a first-degree sunburn, the top layer of his or her skin is affected. The burn will be red or pink in appearance.

Second degree burns: When your feline is suffering from a second degree sunburn, not only is the top layer of skin burned, but so is the layer of skin underneath the top layer. The burned skin will be red in appearance. There may also be blisters present.

Third degree burns: A third degree sunburn affects all the layers of a feline's skin. The affected area may appear white and dry or crusty.

Cats who are suffering from any degree of sunburn may begin to experience itchiness and/or pain. If your furry friend itches a sunburn a lot, it may also lead to bleeding and/or infection.

Treatment:

If you notice your cat has ANY degree of sunburn, it is important to get him or her veterinary care as soon as possible.

Treatment for sunburns in cats depends on what type of burn your furry friend has. Cleaning the burn, shaving the hair around the burn, antibiotics, and topical creams may be needed for first and second degree sunburns. Treatment of third degree sunburns requires hospitalization with intravenous fluids, daily bandage changes and wound care, topical creams, and possibly skin grafts.

Protecting Your Cat Against the Sun

This Memorial Day weekend marks the start of summer, unofficially. Thus, it's time to remind all cat owners of the dangers the sun poses to your cat.

Many cats are at risk of developing sunburns, even those who remain strictly indoors. White cats and cats who have thin fur are especially at risk for developing sunburns. However, certain parts on every feline's body where the skin is thinner can easily be burned. These areas include a cat's ears, tummies, and noses, especially pink noses.

If your cat spends time outside during the summer, he or she needs to have access to shade at all times. In addition, you should apply sunscreen to your cat's entire body if he or she is light-pigmented and to thin-skinned areas if your cat is not.

Even cats who spend time indoors sunbathing or looking outside the window can get sunburned. Similar to cats who spend time outside during the summer months, you should apply sunscreen to your feline's entire body if he or she is light in color and to thin-skinned areas if he or she is not light colored.

Dr. Alison Diesel, who is a lecturer of small animal dermatology at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences asserts that sunscreens with SPFs of 50+ and that are safe to use on infants are also safe to use on felines. However, it is always best to ask your veterinarian for his or her suggestions about what is safe to use on your cat. Though they are hard to find, there are sunscreens on the market made specifically for cats.

Similar to humans, you will need to reapply sunscreen to your cat every two hours, regardless of whether he or she is spending time outside in the sun or inside sunbathing or spending time perched in the windowsill.

Darker colored cats are also prone to the dangers of the sun. These felines are more prone to heat stress because their coats do not reflect as much light as lighter coated felines do. Thus, darker coated cats may be more prone to developing heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Keeping your cat out of the sun at the sun's peak hours will also help you protect your feline from developing sunburns, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion. The sun's peak hours typically span from early afternoon to evening.

Helping an Arthritic Cat be More Comfortable at Home

Arthritis makes your kitty’s joints painful. In addition to treating your cat medically, there are things you can do at home to make your furry friend’s life more comfortable.

Beds: Arthritic cats may find it painful to lay on bare surfaces, so it’s important to provide him or her with soft, comfortable places to lay. Be sure your cat can easily access his or her resting areas. For instance, if you live in a two-story house, put bed on the ground floor so your feline won’t have to climb the stairs to find a comfortable resting place.

You could buy soft, cushy beds for your kitty at pet stores like PetSmart or department stores like Wal-Mart. Alternatively, you could lay soft blankets on the floor for your kitty. Carmine enjoys laying on my bed or in one of his soft kitty beds.

Litterboxes: It is also important to have a litterbox your arthritic cat can utilize easily. If your cat is having difficulty getting in and out of the litterbox, consider getting a pan with shallow sides. Additionally, the litterbox should be easily accessible. If you live in a multiple-story house, put at least one litterbox on each level to prevent your kitty from needing to run up or down the stairs to use the bathroom. If you have a large home, you may want to consider putting more than one litterbox on each floor so that your kitty doesn’t need to travel as far to use the bathroom as well.

Perches: Cats love vertical space; they feel safe and secure on perches at or above eye-level. However, it is often painful and difficult for a cat suffering with arthritis to reach high places. You can help your kitty access his or her favorite high spots by utilizing ramps. You could also use a series of smaller jumps to help your pet reach high spots. For instance, Carmine can easily access one of his favorite windows by jumping up onto my bed, then jumping into the window sill from there. He can manage these smaller jumps very easily. J

Food and Water: As with beds and the litterbox, your kitty needs to be able to easily access his or her food and water dishes. It is essential for arthritic cats to maintain a healthy diet and continue drinking water. Put your cat’s food and water dishes in a room where he or she spends most of his or her time. You may also want to consider slightly elevating your cat’s dishes so that he or she doesn’t have to bend down as far to eat and drink.

Along with medical treatment, making these simple changes at home can help your cat live a more comfortable, less painful, and happier life.

Symptoms and Treatment Approaches to Feline Arthritis

As I discussed in my last post, arthritis is a progressive condition in which a cat’s cartilage breaks down and his or her joints become inflamed and painful.

If your kitty has arthritis, he or she may exhibit some of these symptoms:

Decreased flexibility.
Crying or other displays of discomfort when you hold or pet your cat in a certin way.
Lethargy or inactivity.
Stiffness.
Swollen joints.
Inconsistently using or no longer using the litterbox due to pain when climbing in and out of it.
Hesitating to do certain activities, such as: jumping, climbing stairs, and running.

Because the symptoms of feline arthritis may be due to another condition, it is important for you to take your cat to the veterinarian to get a proper diagnosis before beginning any treatment.

Your cat's veterinarian will perform a physical exam, take blood, and take x-rays to determine if your kitty is suffering from arthritis. If your vet determines your pet's symptoms are due to arthritis, he or she will recommend the best treatment for your furry friend's specific circumstances.

Treatments for feline arthritis include:

Nutritional supplements - Glucosamine and Chondroitin are known to help painful, inflamed joints. You can often find these two supplements in products for cat arthritis together, like in Cosequin.
Anti-inflammatory medication - There are not many anti-inflammatory drugs for cats and they can have side-effects. Thus, vets will typically recommend a nutritional approach to treating arthritis and use anti-inflammatory medication as a last resort.
Weight-loss for obese or overweight cats - Weight-loss has been shown to be beneficial for cats who are overweight or obese. Weight-loss can be attained through proper diet and exercise, which should be guided by your veterinarian.

In addition to these approaches to treating arthritis in cats, you can also make changes in your home to make your kitty more comfortable. I will discuss environmental changes you can make for an arthritic cat in my next post.

What is Feline Arthritis?

Arthritis in cats often develops as a cat ages in much the same way it does in humans. While the most common cause of arthritis in cats is aging, it can also occur after an injury or infection.

Feline arthritis is inflammation in the joints. As a kitty ages, the typically smooth surface of the cartilage wear thin. The body repairs the cartilage as it erodes. However, the surface of the cartilage may become incomplete or irregular. Changes in the surface of the cartilage cause the bones to rub together, inflammation, and joint pain.

Obese cats are at especially high risk for developing arthritis because excess weight puts more strain on the cat’s joints. For this reason, weight management may be a part of a treatment plan for obese cats suffering with arthritis.

The most commonly affected joints include the hips, shoulders, ankles, and elbows, though any joint in the body can be affected.

Unfortunately, arthritis is a progressive disease and most senior cats will suffer with arthritis to some degree.

Carmine: Arthritis & Cosequin

Approximately six weeks ago, I took my kitty Carmine to the vet. My kitty had lost 10 ounces over the past year and I was very concerned about him. After doing blood tests, a urinalysis, an x-ray, and getting exams, Carmine's vet decided that his weight loss was due to stress. Thankfully, he has maintained his weight over several weeks and has not lost any more. In fact, I've noticed that he's recently started to eat more kibbles, which is definitely a positive sign! :)

However, Carmine's x-ray revealed that he has mild arthritis in one of his hips, which none of us were expecting seeing as he is only six years old. I had noticed that he was laying around and sleeping more than he used to. I just figured that this was typical because he is middle-aged now.

After discovering the arthritis, Carmine's vet suggested I put him on a joint supplement called Cosequin. It's available in powder form - you get it in capsules, which you can open and sprinkle onto wet or dry food. I give Carmine his Cosequin on his wet food because I have another cat who shares Carmine's dry food bowl.

Within the past few days, I've noticed Carmine runs around - up and down the hall - like he used to do as a kitten! He also jumps more. He's more active, the way I've always known him to be.

I was reminded how much cats truly hide their pain from us. It is a cat's instinct to hide their pain and illnesses from everyone. Even though many cats have loving, safe homes, like my kitties do, cats have learned to appear healthy to keep themselves safe from prey.

That's why it's so important for us, as caregivers of these precious creatures, to pay close attention to our cats' behavior. Knowing your cats' behavior and typical routine will help you spot changes in behavior, which is often a sign that a cat is sick or in pain.

I'm so glad we found out that Carmine has arthritis early. This will give us the chance to make sure he is not suffering in pain and that he can live a comfortable and happy life. The Cosequin has really helped him a lot, and it makes me happy seeing him more active, in less pain, and content. He is my angel. :)

I think this is a fantastic cause, so I wanted to pass it along to everyone. :)

An auction is currently being held to benefit Wee Paws, a no-kill, cage-free, animal sanctuary that specializes in caring for cats who are considered "unadoptable," those who are elderly, have behavioral problems, are chronically ill, or who are FIV positive. Wee Paws has been rescuing cats since 2004 and currently houses 24 resident cats in a home-like environment.

Unfortunately, the animals at Wee Paws are currently in trouble. The former owner of the home being used as a sanctuary lost the home to foreclosure. While Freddie Mac had agreed to let Wee Paws continue to operate out of the home while paying a monthly rental fee, they have recently recanted the offer, telling the rescue that they must either purchase the home or be evicted from the property.

Paula Abdul, a judge on the television show, American Idol, is currently holding an auction for thousands of pieces of designer clothes to help benefit the Americans Humane Association's Pets and Women's Shelters programs, the Petco Foundation, and Guide Dogs of America.

The auction, which started on June 29, is being conducted with Auction Cause, a company that uses eBay to help raise money for various causes.

Abdul is the spokesperson for the PAWS program. The PAWS program allows victims of domestic violence bring their pets to the shelter with them. The program allows the pets to stay on-site rather than being housed elsewhere in order to provide the animals with safety and victims of domestic violence with a source of comfort and unconditional love while they are undergoing the transition from an abusive relationship.

Abdul is auctioning off thousands of pieces of designer clothes - some worn and some not. Some of the designers include, but are not limited to: Westwood, Dulce and Gabbana, Pucci, Zac Posen, and Burberry. Abdul will donate 10% of the proceeds to the PAWS program. She will also make private donations to Guide Dogs of America and the Petco Foundation.

FDA Approves Felimazole for the Treatment of Feline Hyperthyroidism

The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug Felimazole for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats.

Feline hyperthyroidism occurs when too much of the thyroid hormone T4 circulates in the body. Symptoms can range from milk to severe. Some of the most common symptoms of feline hyperthyroidism include: increased appetite, weight loss, vomiting, muscle weakness, diarrhea, nervousness, high heart rate, increased urination and drinking, heavy/labored breathing, and poor coat.

Hyperthyroidism is a very common condition in middle-aged and senior cats. Field studies were conducted in the United Kingdom and the United States in order to determine the effectiveness and safety of the drug for cats. In the United Kingdom study, 77% of cats had normal T4 levels and 81% of felines had reduced condition severity by day 42 of treatment with the medication. In the United States, cats also had significantly lower T4 levels and improved signs of the disease by day 42 of the treatment. A total of 166 cats were treated with the drug during these studies.

According to the FDA, the most common side effects of Felimazole are: diarrhea, vomiting, a change in food consumption - either a decrease or an increase - and lethargy.

If you believe your cat may be suffering from hyperthyroidism, please visit your vet in order to have your cat examined. Most of the time, vets can perform a simple blood panel to determine if your cat has hyperthyroidism or another disease with similar symptoms.

Vet Communication Differs Depending on Type of Visit

A new study conducted by the Argus Institute at Colorado State University indicates veterinarians communicate differently with clients depending on whether the visit is a problem appointment - one related to a health concern - or a wellness appointment - general check-up.

The Argus Institute found that in wellness appointments, veterinarians focus more on building a relationship with their clients. They try to engage pet owners to take part in their pet's care and to express their opinions during appointments. Vets also tend to talk in a different tone in these visits with more laughter, compliments, reassurance, and social talk.

During problem appointments, vets tend to focus mainly on medical issues. The tone of the appointment is one of stress as many clients are emotionally distressed and anxious and vets are perceived as being in a hurry.

Additionally, the Argus Institute reports that when vets use a paternal communication style in problem appointments, potential negative consequences could ensue for the pet, the client, and the veterinarian. Specifically, Jane Shaw, DMV, Ph.D., and director of the Argus Institute says, "We know that paternalism is not an effective approach in gaining results. Without engaging the client in a conversation about their pet and obtaining their opinion, they aren't as likely to follow through with home care. They also are not as likely to build a strong relationship - and subsequent loyalty - to their veterinarian."

A strong relationship between a client and a veterinarian is important because vets are more likely to get complete and accurate information from clients about their pets and be able to diagnose problems more easily. Clients are more likely to follow at-home care recommendations when vets encourage them to participate in their pet's care as well.

Dr. Shaw recommends veterinarians ask open-ended questions during appointments to encourage clients to open up about their pets.

The Evergreen Cat Lodge: Home Away from Home

If you live in the Denver area, you may be interested in this. I found a great boarding place, which seems like a better option than other boarding facilities, in my opinion. Evergreen Cat Lodge is a cat-only boarding facility that offers suites - not cages - for cats whose owners who want to board them when they travel.

The Evergreen Cat Lodge offers three types of suites from which cat parents may choose. The Very Important Pet (VIP) suites are large in size and offer large windows that overlook the 9 acre estate. Most of the VIP suites also contain either an electric fireplace or an electric replica of a wood burning stove. VIP suites cost $35 per day.

The lodge also offers Deluxe suites for $29 per day. Most of these rooms are as large as the VIP suites and most also contain windows.

Economy suites are availabe for $22 per day and are smaller rooms that still offer the comfort of home.

All of the suites at the Evergreen Cat Lodge contain things that might be seen in a home to offer a more comfortable atmosphere for your kitty. All the rooms also have a glass door so that cats can be checked on without disturbing them.

Litter and water are cleaned and changed at least twice each day. Additionally, liquid and pill medication can be given to your kitty at no extra charge. All kitties also get individual attention while they stay at the facility. As to not disturb cat's feeding schedules, cats can be fed once, twice, or three times a day or free fed. While the lodge does provide cat food at no extra charge, cat parents are encouraged to bring their cat's regular food as to not disturb their diet.

All cats are required to be up-to-date on their FVRCP vaccine and cats who spend time outdoors are also required to be up-to-date on their rabies vaccines.

The first place winner is Pumpkin, a 13-year-old cat who weighed 30 pounds before he began his weight-loss journey. At 30 pounds, Pumpkin's owners, Kathryn Maxwell and Elizabeth Bible, said he didn't move anymore than he had to. They did not force him to exercise, but began to feed him a recommended amount of weight management cat food every morning and evening. He began his weight loss journey in July 2007, and by January 2009, he weighed 14 pounds. His owners say he now plays and runs with the other cats, is much happier, and can groom his entire body.

The second place winner in the Biggest Losers Contest is Serendipity, a nine-year-old cat, who weighed 23 pounds when he began his weight-loss journey. His owner, Marian Kaplan, gives him a little less than 1/8 cup of diabetes food every morning. She tosses it piece by piece down the hall to give Serendipity some exercise and to keep him from snarfing his food, then stealing the other cats' food. In mid-morning, Serendipity receives four dental treats, tossed as well. Ten pieces of diabetic food are then tossed to him mid-day. In late afternoon, he is served 1/4 of a small can of wet cat food in a bowl with three posts, which makes him work for his food. Finally, before bed, he gets 10 more pieces of diabetic food tossed to him.

Serendipity now weighs 11 pounds.

The third place winner in this contest is Baron, an eight-year-old cat who weighed 22 pounds at the beginning of his weight-loss journey. Baron's owner, Nan Schaeffer said when Baron was rescued he was malnourished and gained weight too quickly, which led to him becoming obese. Baron has been eating four controlled meals each day and must jump up to his table in order to eat them. Baron now weighs 13 pounds, and enjoys running and playing.

National Cat Protection Society

It's difficult to think about, but what would happen to your cats if you were to pass away before they did? Would a relative step in and care for them? Would they have to go to a shelter?

The National Cat Protection Society will care for your cats for a lifetime for a one-time fee of $5,000 if there is ever an event that prohibits you from caring for your cats.

The center was founded by C. Robert Calore, who loved cats his entire life. He started the National Cat Protection Society after he completed his Army tour in France where a friendly cat curled up with him in a hole. In 1975, he opened a second chapter of the Society in Spring Valley (his first chapter was opened in Long Beach).

The National Cat Protection Society provides a wonderful environment for cats, with staff members and volunteers who give the cats who reside there a lot of love and attention. Additionally, each cat is served his or her own personal diet, given dental care, and provided with medical care.

The Society opened a special Retirement Center for senior cats, which currently is home to 30 senior cats. Bob Walker will be redesigning the space, and plans to add cut-outs of tropical fish, behind which cats may hide and palm trees with rope wrapped around them for scratching posts. The space is being redesigned to improve the quality of life for the cats who reside there.

Reporting Animal Cruelty

If you witness an animal being abused or suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, you should report it to the proper officials in your state so that they may investigate what is happening.

To find out who you need to report animal cruelty to in your state, please visit this page and select your state from the list. Alternatively, call your local animal shelter or veterinarian and ask to whom you should report animal cruelty.

When you report animal cruelty, you will want to write up a statement of exactly what you witnessed. Be as detailed and specific in your statement as possible and name the other witnesses who saw the act or acts of animal cruelty if any others were present. Be sure to include the date and approximate time of the incident as well. If you have any photos of the abused or neglected animal or perpetrator, be sure to include copies of these photos with your written statement.

Make copies of any written statements and/or photos you hand over to the investigating officials.

The officer should follow-up with you as to the outcome of the case. If you have not heard from the officer you reported the case to in a reasonable amount of time, it is ok to give him or her a follow-up phone call, e-mail, or letter. You may even wish to contact the officer's supervisor if he or she does not respond to your follow-up contact in a reasonable amount of time. Following up with the officer and/or supervisor ensures that animal cruelty is not ignored, is investigated, and that appropriate consequences are suffered by the perpetrators of animal cruelty.

Basically, in Beijing they are capturing cats, putting them in very small cages, and letting them die, a long, slow death. Types of Animal Cruelty

In order for us to fight against animal cruelty, we must first have an understanding of what animal cruelty is.

Violence: Violence towards animals can includes beating, setting an animal on fire, torturing, mutilation of, or any other form of intentional hurt toward any animal.

Neglect: Neglect includes depriving an animal of proper food, water, veterinary care, and/or shelter.

Hoarding: Hoarding involves having more cats than one can reasonably take care of. Most people think of animal hoarders as having 100 animals or more, but really, animal hoarders can have as few as 5 cats if the person housing the cats cannot reasonably care for each and every cat's needs.

In my next post, I will tell you how you can learn about your state's laws regarding animal cruelty.

Human Medication a No-No for Cats

According to Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the most common claims for cat poisoning were a result of cats ingesting human over-the-counter or prescription medication.

I want to remind all of the pet parents and owners out there that while I know it can be costly to make vet trips when your cat is sick, you need to do so in order to get the right medication prescribed for your kitty.

Sometimes, well-meaning pet parents can give their cats a dose of over-the-counter or prescription medication in an attempt to reduce their furry friend's suffering. However, this usually leads to more suffering, not less. Our kitties bodies are much smaller than ours, and often require different and/or smaller medication doses than we do.

If your kitty is sick or injured, please take him or her to a vet and allow the veterinarian to prescribe the right medication for your kitty.

Laser Pointers Provide Beneficial Exercise

About a week ago, I bought my cats a laser pointer. They absolutely love it!

It's a great way to play with my cats and to give them an opportunity to get exercise at the same time.

Exercise is very important to cats. They need it, just as we do, to keep them from becoming obese. Obesity causes many health problems, such as Diabetes for cats.

It also makes cats feel loved when their parents take the time to play with them and to engage them in activities.

I received a newsletter today from the ASPCA, alerting me that the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine is currently considering a measure that will deny animal shelters the right to microchip pets.

The ASPCA says, "In the wake of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters, microchipping has been identified as one of the most effective methods for reuniting pets with their owners. Microchipping by animal shelters is standard practice across the United States, and it’s especially important in Florida--perhaps the state most vulnerable to devastating hurricanes. This vital service that shelters provide to Florida residents and their pets must be protected.

The Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine needs to be reminded that the leading cause of death among pets is not disease, parasites or injury. Sadly, it's the euthanasia of lost pets who cannot be identified."

I agree with the ASPCA, wholeheartedly. Denying shelters to microchip pets will reduce the number of pets that can be reunited with their families.

Vote for Your Favorite Picture in the Funniest Pet Card Contest

A few days ago, Hallmark announced their finalists for the funniest pet card contest. Each finalist was selected by a pannel of judges, which consisted of Dog Fancy's magazine art director, a veterinarian, and creative staff members of Hallmark. Finalists were judged based on humor, theme, and send-ability.

Beginning on June 16th Hallmark will begin to sell cards featuring the pictures of the 67 finalists. The finalists include cats, dogs, chinchillas, birds, guinea pigs, and rabits.

Hallmark is now asking the public to vote on which picture they like the best. The grand prize winner will receive $1,000, a trip to Hallmark, and a professional photo shoot with his or her pet.

Lonely cats?

I just read a Q&A on Cat Channel and I am APPALLED at what this lady wrote in about her boyfriend and his cat. It's not the question she asked, because maybe she really didn't know, but the WAY she phrases it.......

"Q: I have a question about my boyfriend’s 13-year-old cat, Bart. My boyfriend can be a little paranoid and overly protective. He seems to think that he needs to make sure he never leaves his cat alone for any longer than 10 or 12 hours because it is "not nice." He believes the cat gets lonely. This causes a problem for us because we live about half an hour away from each other. It’s hard now for him to stay over, because he feels he has to rush back to be with the cat. It effects what we do, but he doesn’t realize that it’s not necessary. I’ve tried to explain it, but he thinks he is right.

The great thing about cats is that they have no concept of time. So its not like he’s staring at the clock saying, "Man, where is he?” Plus, cats sleep most of the day. I have a Rottweiler that needs more care then a cat, simply because she has to go potty outside. I can’t leave her. But a cat?"

There's a third paragraph, but you get the idea.

I don't normally do this, but what on earth is this woman thinking??? Sure, she may not know that cats have their own sense of time and schedules, but she *should* know that cats need love and companionship!

I just want to say that I APPLAUD Bart's dad for not leaving him alone for more than 10-12 hours at a time, for loving his cat, and for being a good dad to him.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARMINE!!!!!

I don't know Carmine's exact birthday, but I do know it's in February, so I thought we should all celebrate the month Carmine was born!!

Carmine turned three years old this month. It's so hard to believe I've had him for over two and a half years now. It seems like just yesterday that I brought him home from the adoption center.

I love Carmine so much; he has been such a blessing in my life!

Carmine is much younger in the picture above, but it's one of my favorite pictures of my little baby kitty.

How to Prevent Your Cat from Chewing on Electrical Cords

When Carmine was a young kitten, he really loved chewing on electrical cords! This always terrified me because I knew how dangerous it was for him to chew on cords.

If your cat chews on electrical cords, he or she may get electricuted or get severe electrical burns in and/or around his or her mouth.

To prevent your kitty from chewing on cords, you can do several things:

-Spray your cords with Bitter Apple spray, which can be found at pet supply stores

-Put tabasco sauce on the cords

-Cover your cords with plastic covers

-Wrap your cords in duct tape or electrical tape (I have heard this works for some cats, but I have not tried it myself)

I used to spray Bitter Apple on all of my cords, which Carmine really didn't like. He eventually grew out of the behavior he had as a kitten and it is no longer necessary for me to spray my cords.

I hope you find these suggestions useful for the curious cat who loves to chew on cords.

How to Brush Your Cat's Teeth

Brushing your cat's teeth may be challenging, but you can acclimate your kitty to regular teeth cleaning.

Acclimating your kitty to regular teeth cleaning may take a while, so be patient with your little furry friend.

Talk to your kitty throughout the process of teeth brushing. Tell your cat what a good kitty he or she is, that everything is okay. Keep your voice gentle and calm. This will let your furry friend know that everything is okay.

First, take the toothpaste cap off the tube of toothpaste and allow your kitty to smell it. Put a little bit on your finger and let your kitty smell it and taste it if he or she desires.

Next, you can stick your finger or a finger toothbrush into your cat's mouth and gently rub the gums and touch the teeth so that your kitty can get used to what it feels like to have your finger or toothbrush in his or her mouth. Don't attempt to actually clean your cat's teeth just yet.

On another occasion, brush one or two teeth with a small toothbrush or finger brush.

Keep working with your kitty gradually. Build your way up to brushing all of his or her teeth every week, if not more.

Each time you take a new step, reward your kitty with a treat, a nice scratching, some extra play time, or something else your kitty really enjoys.

Acclimating your cat to teeth brushing may take some time, but with patience and positive reinforcement for good behavior, you can teach your kitty to tolerate teeth brushing.

Cats Reduce Risk of Heart Attack in America

I know I promised a guide to brushing your cat's teeth, and I still plan on sharing one with you, but I simply couldn't resist sharing this with everyone!

A new study lends more evidence to support that cats are excellent promoters of physical and mental health.

In this study, Dr. Adam Qureshi and his colleagues followed 4,435 individuals for ten years. Two-thousand individuals in the study were not cat owners while the remaining 2,435 were cat owners.

The researchers indicated that their results show cat owners have a 30% reduced risk of having a heart attack. They also found that people who owned cats were less likely to die from a heart attack than those who did not own cats.

Signs Your Cat Needs a Professional Dental Cleaning

You can tell when your cat's teeth need cleaned professionally by a veterinarian if he or she exhibits any of the following signs:

-Bleeding and/or red gums

-It appears to be difficult for your kitty to eat crunchy or hard food (like dry cat food)

-Yellow staining on the gum line

-Bad breath

-Tartar on the back teeth, which looks yellowish-brown

Making Teeth Brushing More Enjoyable for Your Feline

In between professional teeth cleaning by your veterinarian, it is recommended that cat owners brush their cat's teeth at least once a week at home.

You can buy special beef flavored toothpaste in some pet stores (like PetSmart). You can also buy a traditional toothbrush for your kitty; however he or she may tolerate a finger brush better. Sometimes a finger toothbrush is included with a traditional toothbrush at pet stores.

Controlling/Maintaining Your Cat's Weigh (and Health)

January is Cat Obesity Awareness Month.

Here are a few tips in order to help you reduce and/or maintain your kitty's weight:
-Feed moderately. It is ideal to have specific mealtimes for your cats so that they do not overeat by snacking on dry food that is always available to them.
-Feed them quality food. I find that when I feed my cats more wholesome food, it fills them up faster and is more satisfying to them. It is more expensive per bad; however, it tends to last longer than typical store-brand cat food, too.
-Exercise your kitty: If your kitty is an indoor cat, make sure he or she has plenty of toys to play with and spend time playing with your cat everyday. When you are not at home, having interactive toys available for your cat will encourage him or her to play in your absence.

Holiday decoration hazards

The most recent poll on Cat Channel asked cat owners what holiday decoration most interested their cats. The results show that cats are most intrigued by Christmas trees, with 59% of respondents reporting their cats being most intrigued by this holiday decoration. Thirteen percent of cat owners answered that their cats are most intrigued by garland, 9% said their cats are most interested in the holiday lights, and 6% responded their cats are most interested in stuffed animals/toys related to the holiday season.

Although Christmas has passed, I urge all of the cat owners out there to watch their cats closely when they are under the Christmas tree. While some cats merely enjoy laying under the tree, as one of my cats did, some kitties attempt to climb the tree, which can result in a dangerous situation. In attempting to climb the tree, a kitty can inadvertently knock , cat owners, catit over, which may injure your kitty, not to mention the potential fire hazard this situation presents.

I urge you to watch your kitty as you take down your Christmas tree and put away decorations as well. Curious kitties may try to eat small hooks, ornaments, tinsel, or pine needles.

Do cats make good pets?

Not always.

If you're thinking about giving someone a pet for the holidays, I challenge you to take the following into consideration.

1. Does the recipient actually want a pet? - You might think a kitten or a cat is a great pet to give a loved one, but if your loved one hasn't expressed an interest in having one, a pet may not be a good hift for him or her.

2. Can the recipient take care of the pet? - Does the person you plan to give the pet to have the means to take care of a cat? Will the recipient be able to feed, groom, and take the cat to the vet for regular check-ups and medical appointments?

3. Cat supplies - If the person you plan to give the cat to doesn't have the necessary supplies he or she needs to care for a cat, you may want to inform your loved one ahead of time about the gift. This way, you and your loved one can talk about getting the things the kitty will need - such as food and water bowls, litter box, collar and leash, and toys - before you bring the cat into the home.

Talking with your loved one seriously about getting a cat before you give him or her one may be the best way to ensure the recipient will be prepared and excited about receiving a cat as a gift.

Too often pets are returned to shelters or given away as a result of poor planning when given as pets. Please take these things into consideration when deciding whether or not to give someone you love a pet for the Holidays.
