Discounted Adoptions at Denver Dumb Friends League

If you live in Colorado and have been considering adopting a new furry friend, this may be the perfect time to do so.  From now through June 30, 2012, the Denver Dumb Friends League will take $50 off the adoption fee for any cat or dog one year of age or older.

While kittens and puppies are certainly adorable, adopting a cat or dog over the age of one is actually a very good idea and can prove to be beneficial for people in many different types of situations.  First, training, housebreaking, and chasing after a kitten or puppy takes a lot of energy.  Adult cats and dogs are still playful and quite enjoyable to be around, but they don't require you to train them the way a puppy or kitten does.  A full-grown cat, for instance, will already know how to use its litterbox and knows better than to jump up and hang from the curtains by its claws.

When you adopt an adult cat or dog, you also get a chance to see what kind of pet you're really taking home as their personalities are already formed.  A cat who enjoys sitting in your lap and being pet at the shelter will also enjoy sitting in your lap and being pet when you take him or her home (after the adjustment period, of course).

Unfortunately, adult cats often have a harder time getting adopted as many people want a kitten.  The truth is, though, kittens won't remain kittens for long before they grow into adult cats themselves.  Personally, I think grown-up cats are just as cute, fuzzy, and cuddly as kittens are. :)

All canine and feline adoption fees at the Denver Dumb Friends League include a spay/neuter surgery, a free office visit with a participating vet, all initial vaccinations, a bag of Hill's Science Diet cat or dog food, and a microchip ID implant.

If you are interested in adopting a pet from the Denver Dumb Friends League, you may visit their locations:

Carmine's Hospital Trip

If you get grossed out easily, I would read the short version of this story. If you'd like a more detailed account of what occurred, you can read the detailed version.

Short Version:
On Saturday night/Sunday morning, Carmine was having litterbox issues.  I was afraid he had a UTI or that his prescription diet c/d stopped working and his crystals were back, so we took him to the vet hospital.  It turned out not to be his Feline Lower  Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), but something else, which could have also turned out badly if we didn't get it fixed.  Carmine is okay now, and we will be taking him to the vet in a few weeks to make sure the problem does not reoccur.

Detailed Version:
On Saturday night/Sunday morning, I noticed Carmine running back and forth between the two litterboxes.  I went to watch and see what he was doing, and found him squatting in the box grunting.  He'd then get out and go to the other box and do the same thing.  My first thought was that he was having a urinary tract infection or that his prescription c/d diet had failed suddenly (he's been on it for three years) and that he had developed crystals in his urine again.  I was afraid he was obstructed, so I woke up one of my roommates and we went to the vet hospital.

At the hospital, I told them about his Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease and they took him to examine him.  The vet came out and said he was not obstructed, so that was definitely a relief!  But she said he could have a urinary tract infection or he could be constipated.  So, they took an x-ray of him to see what they could find.

The vet came out to get us a little while later (and she was carrying my baby boy around!) and brought us back to show us the x-ray.  She said she did not see any crystals in his bladder and it did not look like he was constipated, either.

Then she asked me if I had ever had a pet with anal sac problems and I told her I hadn't.  She took us over to show us what she had gotten out of Carmine's.  She said that they were nearly full and about to rupture, which would have caused an abscess and an icky infection.  She was a little puzzled as to why his were full, though, because he isn't on a low-fiber diet.

She informed us that it will take about a month for the sacs to fill up again (if they fill up again), so we are going to take Carmine to his regular vet shortly and see if he is having any problems with them.  Some people have to regularly express their dog's anal sacs, so if this is not a one-time thing for Carmine, it looks like it will be safe to do at home.  I'm going to ask the vet what the best thing to do is, of course.  If she feels it would be better to bring him in every month to have her do it, then I will do that.  It doesn't seem too complicated though, so maybe she can teach us how to do it so Carmine won't have to endure a vet trip every month.  I'm also going to ask her if more fiber in his diet would be beneficial.

I'm hoping this was just a one-time thing, but we will deal with what comes.  Carmine is totally worth it!!  He is feeling a lot better now :)

Remembering Who We Were With Milita and Carmine

Today, we are remembering the way we were when we were younger :) We hope you enjoy the photos of our younger selves!

This is Milita as her younger self.  I didn't have her as a kitten, but she's around 3 or 4 years old in these pictures (she's 8 years old now).

She liked to lay on and take naps on our old couch.

She's enjoying the couch again here :)

She still likes to sit on the top of my black book case.  It's right under a window for her entertainment purposes. :)

This is Carmine as his younger self.  He just turned 7 years old on Feb. 18.

He's approximately 6 or 7 months old in this picture.  He grew out of the habit of napping in the litter box, thankfully. :)

Having a bath.

He loved to nap on the top of our old couch. :)

We hope you enjoyed the pictures of our younger selves.  We're looking forward to seeing all our kitty friends as younger selves, too!

700 Cats Rescued in Florida

The ASPCA reports they have recently rescued 700 cats and kittens from a Florida sanctuary known as Caboodle Ranch.  Madison County Animal Control and Madison County's Sheriff's Office asked the ASPCA to join the effort.  The Madison County Sheriff's Office attained a search warrant for the property after a thorough investigation of Caboodle Ranch, which took more than a year to complete.

The cats found at the sanctuary appear to be suffering from severe neglect, living in dirty, overcrowded conditions.  Many of the felines are also suffering from eye infections, upper respiratory problems, and other medical conditions.  The ASPCA reports that while some of the sick felines were housed together, they were not separated based on their illnesses, which allowed for transmission from cat to cat.

Unfortunately, multiple felines have also been discovered deceased and their bodies decomposing.  Multiple shallow grave sites have also been discovered at the sanctuary.

Hundreds of rescued kitties have been placed in a temporary emergency shelter in Jacksonville where they are receiving shelter, veterinary care, and behavioral evaluations.

Craig Grant, the founder and operator of the sanctuary, has been charged with three counts of cruelty to animals, one count of felony animal cruelty, and one count of scheming to defraud.

Efforts to find and rescue all of the kittens and cats at Caboodle Ranch are ongoing.  If you would like to donate to the ASPCA to help these Florida kitties, you may do so here.  You may also view a short video of the rescue efforts here.

We are sending purrs and prayers to all the kitties who have been rescued, the kitties who are awaiting rescue, and to the kitties who went to the Rainbow Bridge.

Dr. Seuss Day!

It's Dr. Seuss Day!!!!!  Here's our pictures and rhymes.  We hope you enjoy!

I love to lay in the sink!
My favorite color is pink!
I like to watch the humans from the ledge by the stairs,
It's my spot; no other cat is allowed to sit there!

At night, I zoom down the hall,
Sitting up high makes me feel really tall!
Mommy gives me lots of kisses on my head,
I curl up with her while she's asleep in her bed.

Mommy says I have nice fluffy orange fur,
When the humans pet me, I purr and purr.
I think I'll go have a nap in my nice soft bed,
Or maybe.....I'll steal Lita's bed instead!

I'm a kitty who's really sweet,
When I'm really happy, I "tweet."
Mommy says I came from a litter of six,
She says I'm a beautiful Siamese mix!

I like to watch from high above,
I give hugs to the humans I love.
The laser pointer is what I love to chase,
Being cuddled in the human's arms is my favorite place.

All sorts of treats I love to eat,
Fish, chicken, ham, or any sort of meat.
I love my brother, even if I don't show him so,
But I don't want him to know!

We hope you enjoyed our pictures and rhymes! We are looking forward to seeing all of yours!!

Spay/Neuter for $10!

If you live in the Denver-metro area, you can now get your kitten or cat spayed or neutered through the Denver Dumb Friends League mobile clinics for just $10.  Denver-metro residents can take advantage of this opportunity through June 30, 2012.

The $10 spay and neuter surgeries are being offered in honor of World Spay Day, which was on February 28.  World Spay Day is a campaign that encourages spaying and neutering pets in order to reduce pet overpopulation and to decrease the number of pets that are euthanized due to overpopulation as well.

The Dumb Friends League offers two animal mobile clinics in underserved areas of the Denver-metro area.

The Meow Mobile

The Meow Mobile is a mobile clinic that provides donor-subsidized spay and neuter surgeries and vaccinations to cats.  It's a partnership between the Denver Dumb Friends League and the Denver Area Veterinary Medical Society.  Colorado licensed veterinarians along with a Dumb Friends League vet technician and an assistant perform the surgeries and give vaccinations to cats who visit the clinic.

The Lulu Mobile

The Lulu Mobile provides spay and neuter surgeries and vaccinations to cats and dogs.  This clinic is staffed by one full-time and one part-time veterinarian.

All cats (and dogs) must arrive to the clinic in a carrier.  No appointments are necessary; just show up before 7:30AM to the location specified on the clinic calendar.  The service is given on a first-come, first-served basis.  You will be able to pick up your cat (or dog) the same day and post-surgery instructions will be given to you.

If you have more questions about the mobile clinics the Denver Dumb Friends League offers or would like more information, you may call: 720-241-7098.  You can also visit the mobile clinics' web page for more information as well as the clinics' days and locations.
